old tablecloth
An elderly woman in our building put a tablecloth on display one
evening last week prior to it being picked up by the museum. She thought it was needlepoint but actually it was 9 large squares of cross stitch flower bouquets, crocheted together to make the cloth. The work was lovely, the back beautifully neat and finished. All on fine linen. Her brother 'liberated' the table cloth when they raided Goerings castle :) Apparently his mates went for the wine and food on the table, but he scooped up the tablecloth. They weren't supposed to do that so finally he laid the cloth under a mate on a stretcher who was being shipped back home with instructions to mail it to his mother. So it was made pre-1940s, perhaps by the lady of the castle, or a daughter, nobody knows but certainly any stitcher will enjoy seeing it and the stitchers work will always be enjoyed. |
