Default Mobile phones was - a new development in Scotland

Most phones can be set to silent mode, and *should* be!! I was on the train
last Thurs, (see my rant in another thread), and the constant ringing of
cell phones nearly drove me to screaming.

Now that is not only rude, it's just plain outrageous!

The last time I chaired a business meeting and a mobile
phone went off I invited the recipient of the call to put it
on the speaker phone for the whole room to hear rather than
make us all listen to only one side of the conversation, . .
. . . or else leave.

He got miffed and left - to the applause of three of the
other people in the room.

He was not missed!!

I teach groups of friends about quilting in my home, but IF
they bring their phones to an organised class, and IF the
phones ring during a class involving other people, I quietly
and politely ask them to leave the room to take the call or
message, and go on with the class.

I HATE MOBILE PHONES!! The number of people in the world
who are truly that important and indespensible to the
welfare of humanity is simply not that high. I'm sorry -
but I see 95% of mobile phones as just another load of ego
enhancers.

And that goes double for people who continually text
messages, even as they speak to you. Neither of the people
being communicated with is getting the appropriate degree of
attention, and it is rude to both.

Here it is illegal to use a handheld mobile while driving -
but that seems to have made little or no difference to most
drivers. How they can expect to drive safely while texting
is beyond me!

Now climbing quietly down of my soap box. Hope I have not
pierced any eardrums with my rant.

Default OT Smoking sections (was a new development in Scotland)

And that leads poifectly to my favourite saying....

Having a smoking section in a restaurant or any other place for that
matter is like having a peeing section in a swimming pool.

Even the non-smoking rooms in casinos tend to be pretty bad. One of our
suppliers has a trade show in Reno every so often -- we're not going this
year, and one of the reasons is that even with a non-smoking room, we wake
up with teary eyes and blocked sinuses. No thank you.

If you think it's a tough sell there, Linda, you should be here! The
casinos refuse to put in no-smoking sections (except in most of the
restaurants) for fear of losing a single gambler. Just walking through
some of the casinos can leave you smelling as though you'd finished an
entire pack yourself. :S Fortunately, the "local" casinos tend to be
more understanding.

You realize, of course, that the next time I hear a smoker protest about
their god-given right to blow smoke in my face (settle down you smokers! I'm
only talking about the rude ones), I'll be SOOO tempted to tell them about
my right to pee in their pool. ;-)

Default a new development in Scotland

N/M: I agree, for small, locally owned
businesses. It seems too much governmental
interference in small business. After all,
one can NOT patronize, and/or work at, a
restaurant where smoking is permitted. Or
visa versa. For chain restaurants, I'd go
with local smoking laws. JMO.

I have always felt that it should be the buisness owners option as to
whether smoking in the place that they own should be allowed.
Truly public places are of course another matter entirely.

Yes I remember the smoke in Vegas. One big reason we don't go therevery
much and forget about gambling in that air.

Default OT Smoking - was a new development in Scotland

The Reno casinos have "non-smoking" sections, but it's not a big help, cause
the smoke just drifts over to the non-smoking area. I can hardly stand to
go inside a casino anymore & if I do, I just want to hose myself off when I
come out.

Pat - congrats on your 6 smoke-free years!

Default Environment choices O.T. a new development in Scotland

Howdy!
I find it just about as annoying to sit near screaming, yelling,
out of control children (And obnoxious twits on
mobile phones rank in this category, don't they?)
as to sit near smokers.
I usually express a preference to avoid both when in a public venue,
given the choice.
"Smoking or not smoking?"
"No smoke, no screaming kids. Thank you." VBG
"Of course; come right this way."

My boss at the LQS sat out on the front porch, rocking and smoking.
Worked well for all of us. ;-)

If it's that bad, make smoking illegal. Of course, the lost tax moneys
will have to be made up somewhere else.
