Debi, I got an automated response from earthlink to make a request to be
accepted by you. No problem, I've done this before. But when I followed the link to do so, I got an error message. What do we do now? This is what it said - ERROR: Unable to process Allowed Sender request. We're sorry. Because your original message to the recipient is no longer available, we cannot process this Allowed Sender request. Your message may have expired, or the recipient may have accepted or deleted it. You may wish to resend your original message, and check your email shortly thereafter for a new Allowed Sender Request message. If the recipient chooses to allow email from your address, the message(s) that have been intercepted will be delivered immediately, and any future messages will be delivered without delay. hug guildelines
Polly Esther wrote:
Somewhere, there are more guidelines for participating in a hug - such as making a block 6 1/2 if that's what's asked for. The hug's mama may launch in to 'kill' mode if she has to figure out how to put a 5" block in with the others. Having now made five HUGS myself, this is probably THE most important "rule" to my way of thinking. I **always** ask that blocks be sent untrimmed so that I can use my ruler to trim all of them to size. I know many of you think this is silly and that rulers are "close enough" but trust me -- they aren't. Putting a HUG together is a LOT more work than just doing a regular quilt of the same size. I truly LOVE doing them but since it's not a quilt that I have planned and laid out, it's just more work. I can't start the layout until I get all of the HUG blocks, either (but that's just me). On Little Mike's HUG (which I took to DH's work tomorrow and will be delivered today) there were a number of blocks that were trimmed to 6.5" -- it just wasn't *my* ruler's size. There were also several that, while sent untrimmed, were rather "wonky" and ended up smaller than 6.5" when I trimmed them. Because these blocks were smaller, I set them on point and added HSTs and cut them to 8.5". Now, this was OK but it was one more step that I had to take. Actually, I liked the idea of having some blocks set on point so I did the same to a few other of the 6.5" blocks that DID measure right with my ruler :-)! Here's the second part of the size story..... Once I had all the blocks, I determined the finished size of the layout which was a large center square surrounded by 6" blocks surrounded by a 5" border surrounded by 8" blocks etc., etc., etc. I had counted the 6" blocks and had enough to make the quilt 30" on each side. With the 5" border, I would have 40" on each side and the 8" blocks would fit right in!!! OK -- I start trimming the blocks to size using MY ruler and end us with those blocks that were too small. So, I not only had make them 8.5", I had to construct additional 6.5" blocks to take their place. See what I mean by more work? Please understand that I am not trying to be "mean" about this. I just want to point out the difficulties of assembling a HUG from blocks that are just a teensy bit too small. I probably wouldn't have such trouble (I know many of you HUG Moms don't get crazy like me) but I am anal about making sure everything is ***exactly*** the same size right from the start. Really try to use the colors asked for. Kate and I will always wonder exactly what level of 'cheer' was requested for our hugs but Heaven knows they are dazzling happy. ALL blocks sent -- regardless of color or size or skill should used in a HUG. The colors for this latest HUG were autumn shades and purples. Well, there were blocks that bore absolutely NO resemblance to any definition of autumn or purple. They were used anyway :-). I don't mind the odd wonkily colored, I just have to have it balanced by another wonkily colored block :-)! Here again, it just makes the whole assembly a bit easier you can provide the colors asked for or something relatively close. The signatures on the hug blocks mean a lot; do it even if it gives you the trembles. If you really, Really, REALLY don't want to put in your signature, put your initials. Even more important to my way of thinking is to have your location -- just city & state (if USA) or city & country. This lets the recipient actually see where all of the HUGs came from and brings them such joy!! If you can spare it, send a dollar or two with your block. Being the hug mama is expensive. Put your block in a zip bag with your mailing label taped inside just in case the post office stamper goes berserk, and, before you put the bag in an envelope, clip one tiny corner off the bag so it will lie flat. I feel like I'm missing something, not an unusual feeling for me. What did I leave out? Polly I would add that it is a good idea to let the HUG Mom know when you have sent your block. I keep a list of who *says* they will send a block and then note when the person says they have actually sent the block and then check the name off the list once the block is received. I also start a Webshots album so that I can scan the blocks and everyone gets a chance to get a look at them. It's a much fun for me as it is for everyone else and it seems that most people appreciate the gesture. I really do enjoy making HUG Quilts. The challenge of putting all those disparate blocks together in some semblance of order appeals to me. Besides, it makes the recipient SOOOO HAPPY that just about *any* problems I encounter are worth the trouble :-)! CiaoMeow ^;;^ |

new Huggers - anyone?
There's been a lot of good info in this thread. BUT!!! I don't want new
HUGgers to get scared off, thinking that there's no way their block is good enough. It is. Trust me on this. Yes, do your best, but then send it. Also, don't think that you have to make a block for every HUG request that comes in. Do the ones that you can... don't try to do everything and overwhelm yourself. Know that sending positive thoughts is good, too. -- Wendy http://griffinsflight.com/Quilting/quilt1.htm un-STUFF email address to reply "Queen of Squishies" RisingStars @ KarenTucker.com wrote in message news:JSDRf.26630$oL.17963@attbi_s71... Also, all three times I've been a HUG mama I have gotten squares of
fabric in the chosen color(s). Plain 6.5" squares of fabric, not pieced or appliqued blocks, because the person wanted to physically participate but just couldn't manage a "real" block at that time, for whatever reason. And each time that particular square of fabric fit into the HUG perfectly. So, even if all you can manage is one HST or a 4-patch or just a plain square, there is always a need for those in HUGs too. Since Patti S encouraged me that my blocks would be "good enough" (even
though they are not perfect), please include me on the Hug list. Absolutely! In a Sampler Quilt ... and every
Hug is a Sampler ... one needs some restful blocks to compliment the complicated blocks.
