Normally (in the US anyhow), electric motors such as those used for washers
turn at about 1750 revolutions per minute.

Most commercial pottery wheels have a _top_ speed of 250 revolutions per
minute.

Depending on what size rubber wheel you have on the end of the motor
(diameter), you must divide to get the top speed of the wheel as follows:

(diameter of the pulley turning the wheel itself) divided by (diameter of
the pulley or rubber wheel on the motor) must equal 250.

If you are converting a kickwheel to electric operation, you can simply
mount the motor on the kick flywheel so that the rubber on the motor
contacts the kick flywheel wherever you want, then adjust the speed by
moving the motor rubber on and off with a foot pedal of some sort.

If you are using two pulleys and a belt, you will need to find a way to
speed control the motor, or use an idler pulley system to tension the belt
when you want it to move faster, and slip when you want it to "coast".

Hope that helps,
