The one that still bugs me (and no, it didn't happen to me, it was before my
quilting days, I was just an observer):

Someone made a lovely quilt for someone I knew. Now, I'm not an advocate of
"stick it in the closet" by any means---I prefer stuff to get used---and she
*did* use it.

For a dog bed.

Fell off my "person to make a nice quilt for" list forever at that point,
before I even knew I had such a list. g

My objection comes when someone seems to value my quilts enough to want
one but not enough to value the creativity, energy, time, skill and
money that goes into making one. When someone acts like they deserve a
quilt or wants me to do the scut work while they do the lofty designing
part or resorts to double talking to wheedle one out of me, I say no.

I'd have taken that as a huge insult. Just plain nasty.

After all, we're planning on moving this year, and I need all the
bribe items I can get.

OK, call me a cynic......but I'd be more likely, if I were going to go that
route, to make a quilt as a thank you for someone who busted their butt on
my move *after* the fact, not as a bribe before the event. And I probably
wouldn't give them the slightest clue that that would be the reward.....g

At my university, Statistics was refered to as SADISTICS.

Sorry if I'm coming across as a little piffy and long-winded
tonight--I don't pop in here to reply too often, but tonight
I'm feeling sociable/lonely--perhaps having to do with
flunking a Statistics test BIG time and wondering what the
heck I'm doing in college anyway.

Statistics is of the devil - I hated it...took the class twice. My husband
took it so many times he ran out of professors to take it with. Don't let
it discourage you, statistics is some cruel joke and you will get through it

I had this happen to me. I gave a hand-woven (by me) table runner to my SIL.
Next time I visited, I saw it on a chair seat - the cat's chair. I was
pretty mad, but didn't say anything, and took her off the hand-made gifts
list. Well, I've thought about it since then, and I did give it to her to
use. She chose to use it differently that I had in mind, but it was hers to
do with as she wanted. She did, in fact, use it in the main living area of
the house, when she could have easily stuffed it in a closet, never to be
seen again.

She's back on the list, BTW, for other reasons. And, if she chooses to let
the dog sleep on the quilt I make her, then I will just take it as a sign
that she loves the dog. G

I think the difference between your situation and the orginial posters
is that 1) you want to do this quilt out of love and 2) no one
asked/demanded that it be done.

I do quilts for family and friends who I know will appreciate the work
and thought and who don't try to control what I do or when. I have a
friend who wants one, but wouldn't appreiciate what I do. She thinks my
work is equivalent to a quilt she could buy at Walmart.

I have a DEAR friend Joan (like a mom/friend) whom I met while going
to nursing school many many moons ago. Well, Joan (who is old enough
to be my mother) has gone through the deaths of 2 of her own adult
children and then a most recent death of her grandson (age 21 and one
of our Military) whom Joan raised since he was a baby when his mom
(Joan's daughter died.) Though we are many many miles apart we still
stay in touch after all these years and I could not help myself (even
as a beginner quilter) but to offer Joan a Memory quilt in honor of
her deceased son, daughter and now grandson. I have not yet started as
Joan is in the process of collecting what she wants included in the
quilt (60x60) and because of my health issues all fabric must be
fragrance free.

I feel blessed to be able to do something for my dear friend who is
indeed suffering from her losses.

Lovingly,
Kathy (in Alaska)

Sooner or later I think every quilter gets a request from
family/friends for a commissioned quilt. Now I am faced with one
of those requests.

Is this your attempt at being subtle?

Anyhow, if I need an excuse, I'll gladly use you as one...

I can only use one or two on my own bed, so it's only sensible for me to
keep sending them off to new homes.

I want you to make me a quilt. You pick the colors and the design. There,
was that direct enough?
