Default Help needed! Need an easy DWR pattern!

Hey gang! I'm in a somewhat desperate need for a DWR pattern that is
at least somewhat easy. Mom and I are making one for my SIL for her
birthday in October and are having no amount of fits with the current
pattern we are attempting (using John Flynn's system with the workbook,
but things aren't liking to lay flat, even after figuring out that I
turned two pages instead of one the other day). We are getting the
hang of it somewhat, but it still isn't laying like we'd like and Mom
is worried about puckering when it is quilted once we have it finished
so, although we haven't totally given up on this pattern, she and I
discussed maybe looking for another one just in case we can't figure
the rest of this out. Anyone know a good pattern that isn't too
complicated?

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

There is the McCall's web page paper pieced one or the
rotary template set that are both about as fast as it
gets. You might want ot google it because we just had a
thread going here a week or two ago.

Hi, Tigg, My Mom made two DWR quilts many years ago and she used the
Sharlene Jorgenson templates and she said that it was easy to do (as easy as
a DWR can be, I guess LOL). I think her website is www.qheartland.com Hope
this helps.

That's the system we are using. They have some pretty ones in the
book.

I second this recommendation -very easy and clear directions, and a method
for speed-cutting the patches.

Have you seen the book called Rings that Bind. Interesting method of
construction. Am presently trying to make it myself. You have to use
batting such as W&N, the fluffy stuff doesn't work. Ask me now I know.

I haven't tried the QuiltSmart method, but it looks like it might be
pretty easy. http://www.quiltsmart.com/

Howdy!
Looking at Rings That Bind on HGTV:SimplyQuilts:
http://tinyurl.com/6kuqc
it's about 3 times more complicated than the first DWR I made w/
the very flimsy John Flynn templates about 15 yrs. ago. At that
time the JF template set came w/ an instruction brochure that did NOT
include finishing details;
I learned to bind those curves all by myself. G
I quilt inside & outside the arcs, melons, and in the centers & corners.
Shar Jorgensonšs templates are much nicer than the early JFs.

Anyway, whatever floats her boat w/ the Rings That Bind, but this
just looks like more work than necessary.

Tiggr, are you lining up the middle of the arc w/ the middle of the
melon or the middle of the center piece, pin, match the corners,
pin, then pin in-between the pins? Treat that curve like a straight
line and forget it's part of a circle. Sew the seam, then carefully
clip into that seam every 1/4"--1/2", finger press it open, and watch
it lie flat. Those corner pieces are just going to match up the
same way. You'll be done before you know it. BUT if you need more
help, speak up.
Btw, this is much easier when pieced by hand; the "fudge factor"
where you gently nudge that seam to match really helps. g
For my 2nd DWR I made just 4 rings and gave it as a Wallhanging Gift.
Now you know why. VBG

Good luck!

Well, I didn't think about clipping the seams. Might try that
tomorrow. The templates that Mom ordered are acrylic now, not sure
what they were made of before that. We did compare the one for the
melon with the one in the book and they aren't exactly the same size,
so we made a plastic template from the book and are using that for the
melons (can't rotary cut them, but oh well). We are doing the matching
the middle and pinning, then pinning the corners, then between the pins
though. She's going to send it out for quilting so won't have to worry
about binding the curves (they do that there too). As to doing it by
hand, neither Mom or I have the ability to do much by hand anymore, and
since it has to be done for Mary's birthday in October, I don't think
that is an option.

Rags, didn't you tell me that you made one using just one piece for the
arcs, two different colors, at one time?
Tigg
