Time for another Roll Call?
Tia Mary here, RCTQ Queen of Kitties -- mostly by default since no
one has challenged me for the crown -- LOLOL! Besides, I begged for it :-)))). I live in Magnoliaville (AKA Cumming, GA about 50M north of Atlanta) and have been here for nine years TODAY!! Married to "Ol'watzisname" for about 35 years and we still haven't killed each other =8-0 . One DD who is married and lives in Lizard Land (AKA Phoenix, AZ) with my one and only SMDGD Raechel who will be 5 in May. When Dh retires in about 2 years, we will move back to the high country in AZ and not be so terribly far from our family. I now have just two QIs. Casey (Baby Cat) a Chocolate Point Himalayan with sparkly blue eyes and oft' combed long, long fur and Reno (Black Cat) a DMH with lovely gold eyes and soft, luxurious coal black fur. Both babies are about 11 years old and were rescues from the group at the Tempe Pet Smart. We have had both babies since 1997 and they are fat, lazy and VERY good at helping me when I am at the sewing machine or doing anything else. Right now, Cassie is asleep on the right hand side of the computer desk and Reno is sitting on the stool in front of the window to the left of the computer. Obviously, I am never left alone, well unless they are asleep somewhere and don't realize I have left the room -- LOL! Once DH has retired and we move back to AZ, we will get another doggie QI, probably another Lhasa Apso as I LOVE that breed and am very partial to animals with long hair :-). I am a professional seamstress which is how I pay for my quilting and needlework addictions. My quilts are done totally on the sewing machine. If I want to do hand work, I will do needlework (surface embroidery, cross stitch, counted work, pulled and drawn thread work, needlepoint, etc.). I don't usually do quilt blocks with lots of little pieces, probably because I have done enough "fiddly" general sewing to satisfy that need. I really enjoy doing paper pieced blocks and generally do a PP kitty face when I make HUG blocks. DH and I travel a lot, especially since we moved to the east coast, likely because it is a much shorter flight to Europe AND he travels for his work. Since moving here we have gone to Amsterdam, Vienna, Ireland, Germany and the Czech Republic. We have taken several Caribbean cruises and have just recently returned from a cruise to The Bahamas (this was part of my birthday gift). Before moving here we went to Tahiti, Japan, Fiji, took a Mexican Riviera cruise and made numerous trips to Hawaii. We are certified PADI divers and did our certification dives in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. We have made dives while in Fiji, the Caribbean and Hawaii but haven't done any diving for the last 3 or 4 years. So, that pretty much takes care of my "get acquainted" info. I look forward to seeing what everyone else has to say about themselves :-). Time for another Roll Call?
Let's see: Born in Oregon in 1972 and lived there until early 1994,
when I moved to Alaska. Then moved to England in December 1995, then Scotland in October 1997, where I've been ever since. Currently studying Scots law, but have several other degrees behind me.. Should be taking my exams in late April and finding a 2-year traineeship anytime now.... Watched my mother make all of our clothing and toys (I'm the youngest of 6) and did a bit of handsewing as a child - wasn't allowed near the machine since my mother sewed her finger once! (Meant I was destined to sew mine as well?) So I did a few pillows and those 2-sided pillow toys that you simply sew round the outline and stuff. I took a sewing class at age 13 and absolutely hated it - everything was so prescriptive and there was no room for creativity. I did make a t-shirt that I wore until I grew out of it though... I used to make teddy bears and dolls and that sort of thing for my 17 nieces and nephews, and 3 greatnieces, 1 greatnephew but really only got into patchwork and quilting while working on my Bachelor's degree by distance learning, and spending long afternoons in the public library. Yes, reading about P & Q was one of my original displacement activities. After reading about it for several years, I then found RCTQ with the help of my then partner, a computer savvy guy and started reading and posting in 2000 I believe. I never looked back from there! I don't know anyone locally that sews, so the only quilty friends I have are all from RCTQ - but they're the best quilty friends a person could have. I have also met quilters on other lists - I read British Quilt List for a while until they *only* talked about non-quilting stuff and I left. It was fun to go to Berlin and meet 2 quilters while I was there, whom I had written to for some time. If any quilters is going to be in Scotland, just let me know and I'll put the kettle on, and try to give you a guided tour of Dundee. Sadly, our Jam, Jute and Journalism is no more (well, we still have Journalism) but I specialise in showing you the many castles and the Italian cafe which makes their own ice cream... plus a fabric shop not far from it.... I used to be owned by a very intelligent Seal point Siamese, Sasha, who sadly died in October 2006, and I still miss her. I have 2 new owners now, sisters Poppy and Daisy (they just turned 2 years old) who are currently either destroying the house or possibly getting into my ice hockey uniform bag again. Either way, it sounds like a load-bearing wall is coming down in the bedroom.... Pictures of my family, friends, quilts and cats are to be found at: http://community.webshots.com/user/Jo_in_Scotland http://dundee.facebook.com/profile.php?id=644869287 I like piecing (mostly by machine) and quilting, again, mainly by machine. Having said that, I do have a little sewing roll my Mum made when I was 8 and I keep a few hand piecing projects in there for when I'm on the bus or the train, etc. There's usually some embroidery in there as well. The triplets I babysit like to watch me sew, but they're not quite 3 years old (April 13th) so it will be a little while yet before I can fully convert them. Might try teaching them hockey first... -- Jo in Scotland |

Time for another Roll Call?
I'm a retired elementary school teacher, living in the foothills of NW
GA with my QI (feline,) Gray Soufflé. I have two grown children, neither nearby, and three grandchildren. I moved into a new house shortly after retiring and I love my house and the community it's in -- lots of trees, wildlife (like deer, raccoons, possums, and the occasional bear,) and a beautiful lake that's pretty and clean and can be used for swimming, boating, and fishing. We have fitness classes here and I do two fitness Yoga classes and two lo-impact cardio-strength classes a week. When the weather is nice, I play tennis, but I'm a beginner and I don't think I'm destined to get very good at it. I have a hydrobike that I love to ride on the lake (picture an upright exercise bike on pontoons.) The best way to learn more, if you're interested, is to go to my website in my signature. Time for another Roll Call?
Ok, I'm from Western Australia, born in Tasmania. 54 years young. Work for
Public Trustee in Trust Management, Have been quilting for 10 years or so. Separated with 3 great DD's and one DGS. I have a SO who is in the energy industry and although he may not understand all my interests, supports me regardless. Sadly my QI used the last of his nine lives yesterday, but at 17+ I could not selfishly keep him with me any longer. I mostly sew QS quilts for my family and friends. Am currently working on a wine coloured/grape themed quilt for my bed. Also some wearable quilted clothing. I LOVE dark chocolate and red wine. Anyone in the West of Australia is more than welcome to drop in and visit. Heather in West Oz "Sally Swindells" wrote in message ... As Cornwoman wrote 'Now I want to know more about each of you! I'm a retired software engineer, married 40 years, mother of 2, grandmother of 4, no QIs. I've lived in Minnesota most of my life (except for a few years across the border in Wisconsin). I learned to sew on my mother's treadle machine when I was in grade school. I did a lot of garment sewing -- everything from lingerie to my wedding dress to blue jeans. In 1973, my son was going from the crib to a big bed so that the baby we were expecting could have the crib. I used a lot of corduroy scraps left over from garment sewing to make a quilt for his new bed. I backed it with a sheet and tied it with yarn. That quilt was on his bed until he got married. That was my first quilt, and I've been at it off and on ever since, especially the last 10 years or so. I do mostly traditional-type patchwork and some hand applique. I machine quilt most of my stuff, but also do some hand quilting. My main sewing machine has always been an Elna, ever since my parents gave me one when I graduated from college. I belong to the local guild and edit their monthly newsletter. Time for another Roll Call?
I got an email that there was a roll call so thought I would
drop by. I am 50plus, not married, 3 official QI cats (see sig block and Webshots) and a variable number of wannabes, and I'm retired for health reasons after 20+ years in the Aussie Air Force (RAAF). I live in a rural area in the SE corner of Australia in the beautiful State of Victoria. I started my first quilt over 30 years ago and it is still here in a box - unfinished. Back then we had no dedicated quilt shops. When I saw a cushion made from a single oversized Cathedral Window block I was convinced that I could make a quilt from similar smaller blocks. So I sailed off in my ignorance and bought miles of poly-cotton fabric (all I could get at the time) and proceeded to scissor-cut it into squares that made tiny CW blocks that were to be assembled into an ENORMOUS quilt (floor length on a QS bed). Just to add to the nightmare I decided to make the inserts into tiny padded pillows (stuffed with poly stuffing of course), and the main fabric was navy blue (impossible to sew at night), all stitched with poly thread. The box that holds that quilt is labelled "Ignorance is Bliss", and I carried it around Australia with me through over 2 doz moves. It should have taught me to look before I leap when planning new projects - but it didn't lol. I have almost enough made that if I turn it on its side it will make a very long skinny bed topper for a single bed. I will probably never finish it but I just cannot bring myself to part with it either. The truly scary part is that I now teach quilting (well - quilt making and applique, I don't quilt much myself) and I always show newbies my "Ignorance" quilt rofl. Just for the record, I don't eat chocolate and I don't drink coffee. But I will barter Cherry Ripes, Crunchies and Tim Tams for fabric (just kidding - I have more fabric than I can use in five lifetimes but I am always willing to intro "foreigners" to our Aussie delicacies). I don't post much and read only sporadically now. I get only a portion of posts through my ISP, and I have eyesight problems. But this group has brought me many laughs and much valuable info over the last couple of years. Welcome to all the newcomers and "Hi!" to "old" friends. -- Cheryl & the Cats in OZ o o o o o o ( Y ) ( Y ) and ( Y ) Boofhead Donut Rasputin http://community.webshots.com/user/witchofthewest catsatararatATyahooDOTcomDOTau "Sally Swindells" wrote in message ... : As Cornwoman wrote 'Now I want to : know more about each of you!
