In 2000 QNM (along with International Quilt Market and Festival) conducted a
survey. At that time, the average age was 55. Check out some other interesting facts he http://quiltersvillage.com/qinamer/index1.html I'm still looking for something more recent, though! -- Louise in Iowa nieland4 at mchsi dot com http://community.webshots.com/user/louiseiniowa "DrQuilter" wrote in message ... how about this quote from the first article: Studies show the demographic of quilters is 99 percent women, she said, with an average age of 58 do you think really the average age is 58??? that sounds hight to me. a LOT of the quilters I know are under 58. unless the older ones are less 'social'? I can see how they could be less involved in a quilting newsgroup... -- Dr. Quilter http://community.webshots.com/user/mvignali (take the dog out before replying) |

I found another survey conducted by QNM in 2003, and it looks like this one
may be the source of the statistics in the paper: http://www.quilts.com/pressreleases/...a%20Survey.pdf -- Louise in Iowa nieland4 at mchsi dot com http://community.webshots.com/user/louiseiniowa "DrQuilter" wrote in message ... how about this quote from the first article: Studies show the demographic of quilters is 99 percent women, she said, with an average age of 58 do you think really the average age is 58??? that sounds hight to me. a LOT of the quilters I know are under 58. unless the older ones are less 'social'? Well, I'm 33 and my quilting companion turned 30 on Jan 3rd. I started
quilting when I was in my very early 20's. ~handmaiden Kathy Applebaum wrote: "DrQuilter" wrote in message ... how about this quote from the first article: Studies show the demographic of quilters is 99 percent women, she said, with an average age of 58 do you think really the average age is 58??? that sounds hight to me. a LOT of the quilters I know are under 58. unless the older ones are less 'social'? LOL I just did a quick calculation, and the average age of my quilt circle is 58.8 -- I'm the baby at 41, and our oldest member is 82. But working in the sciences, I know you had enough statistics classes in school to know that it's all in how you select your sample population. I'm sure I could design a study to show that the average quilter is (insert characteristic here) if you let me carefully select my sample. |

quilting for 10 years now. -- Alice in NJ, Royal Cybrarian http://www.ourcyberfamily.us http://www.ourcyberfamily.us/RCTQ/index.htm (add a recipe) "Just as you began to feel that you could make good use of time, there was no time left to you.." I just went back and read a little more about the survey that was conducted
(see my post under Rowdy Quilters). Turns out that the profile is that of a "Dedicated Quilter." A dedicated quilter is defined as one who spends more than $500 a year on quilting-related purchases -- and they are only 5.21% of all quilters. So, the average age is that of a dedicated quilter, not necessarily quilters as a whole. -- Louise in Iowa nieland4 at mchsi dot com http://community.webshots.com/user/louiseiniowa "Kathy Applebaum" wrote in message m... Same with my guild Kathy. They used to tease about how I got in being so young. I am 47 now but been there over 8 years. Lots of the gals have kids my age. I bet in a night time guild you would find a younger crowd than a day meeting one. Taria Kathy Applebaum wrote: Funny, 58 sounded *low* to me, thinking about the ladies I see at guild! If 58 is the average, then I'm close at 57 but my daughter is 25 and
granddaughter is 5 and both of them are beginning quilters. -- Mary http://community.webshots.com/user/mardor1948 "handmaiden" wrote in message news:QOzId.15816$IP6.10107@trnddc05... : Well, I'm 33 and my quilting companion turned 30 on Jan 3rd. Howdy!
We've talked about these stats for several years, and I still think "they lied." VBG Many quilters have not confessed that they are "dedicated quilters." We all know that in the Grand World of Quilting, $500 is a drop in the stash basket. g Go to page 1 of that QNM survey to see how limited the survey was, and it didn't go to just quilters. When they did a similar poll at the Really Big Quilt Show in Houston a few years ago, more quilters admitted to spending more money, and the average age of the respondents was mid-40s. More "dedicated quilters" attend that show than non-quilters do. As Miz Applebaum says, results from these polls and surveys vary according to the criteria used to obtain the information. Reminds me of the car dealership "customer satisfaction" survey results: mostly people who are NOT satisfied fill out and return the cards; the satisfied customers seldom do (some of us are exceptions to that rule, some are just exceptional). Is $1 enough incentive to return a survey about quilting, esp. when the postal customer is not a quilter? The other day someone called w/ a survey on Yellow Pages telephone directories. I use the SwBell y.p., often. The incentive for answering an extended survey on-line is $50-- now that's an incentive! My car guy dealership guy says he doesn't want me to
go to 'all the trouble' of filling the survey out so I bring it in to him. He fills it out for me and I get a free oil change. I tease that if I had a complaint I would say so but knowing me for years he already knows that. When I look at all the guild folks I know I would say that really a small percentage are big quilt show travelers. Just about the only average for quilters I have found is most are really good cooks and all are really good eaters! Taria Ellison wrote: Howdy!
