Someone in our quilters group here has recently finished a single bed
size quilt made with 1" hexagons. It was absolutely beautiful. It
wasn't made into the GFG type of pattern, just shading from colour to
colour (she dyes her own), and was really lovely.

That sounds beautiful. Was it like a watercolour quilt? I've never seen
that done with hexagons before. It's usually square isn't it? Do you
have a photo?

Hullo Mel
Sorry, no, I don't have a photo - and I don't really know her well
enough (yet!) to ask; but, it wasn't like a watercolour quilt, in that
there was any specific shape within the overall quilt. It just flowed
from one colour to the next without any consideration of size of area or
anything. The hexagonal shapes remained easy to see - they didn't sort
of blend their outlines. Goodness knows how many colours she had? but
there were no prints as such, just her hand dyes - which do tend to be
shaded and of several colours each, if you see what I mean.
If it gets displayed for our exhibition in the summer, I'll try to take
a picture of it then. I may forget who asked, so please forgive me if I
post a message asking who asked me!!!!

I"I'm piggybacking off Teri cause my server just loves dropping posts before
I can catch up. I am looking for some oriental fabric, the kind that has
oriental writing, pictures of dragons and the oriental ladies and so on. I
found some beautiful fabric at JoAnn's but its the satin stuff and I need
cotton. I'm always in the market for handdyes and jeweltones too, in any
color.

And now I'm going to print out the list so I can have it handy before my
server completely loses it.

I just did a 6" block with 3/4" hexagons and they are not so small. you
quickly go from one to 7 to 19 though so it is a lot to baste over the
little cardboards (I think I am getting mylar templates for the next
one... good way to use all those small scraps, a scrappy GFG...

Mel,
What size are you looking for?

I'm going for a more-or-less authentic scrappy look, so I can use scraps
big enough to cover a 2" hexagon. I'd even be prepared to piece a couple
of scraps together to cover one hexagon! So just little scraps will be
appreciated. I'm not fussy about colours either - I'll use them all to
make a bright and cheerful quilt.

Sorry to reply to my own post, but I've had a think and cut some
templates, and I've made a decision. I'm going for 1" hexagons. I think
I may be mad, and I may live to regret it, but this is my decision and
it's final. Probably.

Currently on the lookout for police themed fabric for DH, but preferably
without fireman stuff thrown in. I'm always on the lookout for Halloween
fabrics, or pumpkin fabric (coloured or themed), or pink fabrics now for DD.
I love all fabric though, and squishies always get equal fondling time at my
house!

I tried the Quilt Patis (plastic hexagon templates) and I'm not a big fan. The
fabric doesn't baste down really snug because you never stitch into the
template and the side seams are difficult because the plastic template won't
bend like paper ones do.

My favorite material to use for the templates is the advertising cards in most
magazines. It doesn't take long to collect enough and they're all pretty much
the same weight.

Let me know if you try the mylar templates.
