Default Help with Quilt, border or not??

I thought I would spell Quilt with a capital this time....lol

I finished piecing the top. Now my question is do I add a border. A
border is more work but it may help me fudge any errors I've made. So if
you have second take a look at the pics and tell me what you think. If I
do add a border I was thinking plain. Nothing fancy maybe black, small
about 2-3 inches. Also what color do you think for the backing? The
pictures do this Quilt no justice. The squares start with red or green
in the center but then the next one is usually a grey and the outside is
tone on tone white. Crappy camera but it works.

I like that!!! I wouldn't put a border on it if it were mine. I didn't
border my courthouse steps because I thought it subtracted from the design
and I think I would think the same thing about this one.

It's a good enough photo to tell it is gorgeous.

Beautiful top! Personally I would add a border or 2 to frame it. Maybe a
small inner border and a little larger outer border using the fabric you
used in the top. Also for the back use one of the lighter fabrics for the
back--like the gray. Try placing some fabric at one edge to sorta preview
the borders before you decide if you even want the borders

I have no fabric left over from the top. The top was built with fabric
from around the US. Ladies from a group I was in years ago sent me fat
quarters and this is the end result. Which is why I'm so proud of this
one is has taken me more than five years to get all the fabric and put
it together this far. Thanx for your thoughts.

Yes, black border would suit this nicely. It would give the illusion of
the blocks 'floating' ... a feature I really like. Back? Black and white
print. Binding, red of course.

I love the quilt! Although I prefer borders I'm not sure this quilt
needs one. Perhaps a dark binding a little wider than normal. As for
the back, since the top is geometric, a nice large rose pattern of reds
on black with some green . You know, a circular effect to balance the
lines on the front.

Hi Joanna,
I think I'd like a thin border of red and then a wider
border of black. For the backing, a black and white print.

I would try out a triple rail border, of black, white and red. You could
even run them around the edge in a spiral pattern. that is, put the top
border on, letting the end hang over, and leaving about 2" or so unsewn (it
will connect up with the right side when done. Then put on the left border.
It will be the length of the quilt top, plus the width of the top border.
then do the bottom, same as the left and then the right. The right border
will then be sewn to the top border, finishing up the partial seam.

Here's an example of partial seaming - look at the Bright Hopes block. The
center of the block would be like your quilt top, and the side pieces are
like the border.

Clear as mud to your baby-drained brain?

I agree, no border. If you do want a border for the error fudging
factor (a legitamate reason if ever there was one), go with black or an
even darker purple if you can find one. For the back, any color you've
used in the front. For the binding, bias cut pieces of the fabrics (or
like colors) you've used in the front in short pieces to create a candy
cane effect.

Think about using a narrow border of a color which 'goes with' the
colors in the quilt. They if you want a black border, it wont look
like a totally black quilt. Stand back and look at your quilt, Take a
piece of black fabric and lay beside the edge and squint. True in
auditioning any fabrics used together. Audition the width desired
also. Sal
