Default Oval Quilt Suggestions Needed

Hullo Ginger
Just a reminder that you could use any pattern at all and just round it
off when you've finished.
Also, a circular pattern could be 'distorted' to make it oval.
You could make a 'rectangular' Trip Around the World', and round it off;
or a rectangular Blooming Nine Patch, rounded off, would be stunning.
You could design your own pattern - say, with concentric oval strips
made up of triangles. This could be done by paper-piecing for the
strips and then just sew them together at the end. There wouldn't be
that much actual curved piecing (and just clipping seam-allowances and
pinning evenly would take care of that).
Most star patterns could be distorted, in the same way as your Mariner's
Compass' was to make it fit into an oval.
If you like them, a crazy quilt could easily be made to an oval shape.

Hope that gives you some lines of though to go down! Interesting
project. Do let us know what you decide to do.

I need to make another oval tablecloth for my 72"x48" oval dining table. I
made an oval mariner's compass several years ago before I knew hardly
anything about quilting. We use it all the time and it is really becoming
quite worn. A picture of it is in my Other Sewing album. I plan to use a
similar color scheme for the new tablecloth. Any pattern suggestions? I
searched, but couldn't find any that I liked. I know I could use a
rectangle, but I don't want to. G

TIA!

There's always a whole cloth ;-)
Then there's appliqué. Or you could do a smallish double wedding ring
"medallion" and appliqué it to a larger oval cloth.

Judy Mathieson's got an oval compass in _Mariner's Compass Quilts: New
Directions_. Would make a stunning tablecloth.

Thanks for the great tips & ideas, Pat. You gave me a lot to think about. I
finished making the napkins today, so I really want to start on the
tablecloth.

Ooh, I love her *beautiful* mariner's compasses! But, I think I probably
don't want to make another mariner's compass tablecloth, although at least I
would know about making the points pointy. G Thanks to your great
suggestion, I think I will make a mariner's compass quilt for Christmas for
my DSIL.
