...we
can't go visiting
because we don't fancy hanging out in people's driveways.

I'd like to add --- But we have done this! (Hang out in driveways because
there was no alternative) It's just sort of cold now. And I like to sit down
on furniture, personally...... ;-)

Why should anyone add something expensive and disfiguring to their house just
because they might have a visit from someone in a wheelchair
someday? I mean, we understand that. We're not unreasonable.

Oh, I realize that. I know you weren't complaining, just telling it like it
is. I just feel rotten that I've never really thought about all the
complexities that being in a wheelchair entails. You know those ramps that
kids are always building for skate boarding? I was thinking it would be nice
to have small, portable ones available for homeowners.

Specifically for you, though, Sooz, I think their timing left a LOT to be
desired.

Actually, I don't think LDS missionaries are supposed to be out tracting after
dark either. Definitely creepy.

We have a ramp into the house for a formerly elderly golden retriever, and it
works very nicely for persons of the wheelchair-propelled persuasion!

They'd taken the forms off on Friday, so I guess the next step is doing the
tensioning and then framing can start.

I'm so excited for you guys!

When I went to live in Canada, it was supposed that because Canada was an
"English Colony", they were much more conservative and even a little
backwards. But it was when I returned to the States that I encountered
sexism, and conservatism.

It is to a Westerner. Medicine has been practiced there in that manner for
a very long time.

Worse, and unfortunately not as uncommon as the above scenario; a gay
couple has kids; one of the couple is the biological parent and the other
is not. The non-biological parent cannot legally adopt the kids because
the other biological parent is still around and involved. You can probably
imagine what happens if the biological parent in the gay couple dies.

I'm pretty much staying off this thread, but this made me wonder. Say a
male couple decides they would very much like to have a child, or children.
Would it be possible for a lab to take sperm from both, and mix the two
samples, thersby not allowing any clear picture of exactly what sperm
impregnated the donor egg? Sana a blood test being done after the birth,
this could be a way to say the kid is biologically the spawn of both male
parents. Or is my imagination in over drive? Just letting the mind drift
on this one.

They do make folding aluminum ramps for wheel chairs. Mostly used to get
into vans but might work well for a step or 2. I think 3 stepd would make it
too steep.
For anyone who is interested the standard is one foot per inch of height. If
your porch is 24" off the ground you need a 24' ramp. This is the Fed.Gov't
safety standard.

Sure. Use a turkey baster on a friend! :-D

But it's okay. I personally don't understand.....Why aren't more of us
comfortable with this sort of discussion? There aren't any flames (except
toward "Steve", of course).
