Default Another quilt shop closing! Sad, very, very sad!

I just received an email from the Quilt Connection in Berkley Heights, NJ
announcing that they are closing as of July 21st. I just took a class there
and had signed up for another one even though the shop is a good 1.5 hour
trip for me each way. Their fabrics are outstanding and the service
wonderful. This was one of my favorite shops on the NJ shop hop as well.
No idea why they are closing. So sad to see them close.

Oh, no! I had just discovered that shop last year and was planning a
return this fall.

It is crazy how many shops are closing! I just recently found out that two
shops in my area are closing by the end of this month.

Oh dear, Alice. I do hate to hear about closings. My knowledge and
understanding of economics is entirely too tiny to predict what's going on .
.. . but armed with the fact that shops are closing, we only have one
option. Go shopping. Buy fabric before our sources are replaced with
condos and auto parts shops. Yesssss. Okay, friends, you know what you
must do. Polly

Howdy!

In the grand, over-all view of the quilting world
I'm not worried about the number of shops closing.
With so many smaller shops opening as a hobby kind of business,
w/owners who never ran a business & haven't done their homework, who
aren't funded to live thru' the lean(er) months, don't grow a
"relationship" with the quilting/sewing community, and even those
who do everything right, sometimes there are just too many shops,
unable to survive on the shared quilter dollars.
One comes to mind: a new shop opened recently in a nearby town;
the owner moved from one shopping center to a smaller one for cheaper
rent. It's hard to find. It's hard to get into (right off a busy
state highway w/ traffic going 55+ mph -- you think twice before
slowing down w/ a couple of big trucks on your back bumper
to turn into the tiny parking lot).
It's a very small space, about 1/2 the size of a strip-mall haircutting
shop. It's stuffed w/ fabric and samples, the staff is very friendly,
but you can't walk between the rooms without stumbling on stuff,
or running into someone *bump* "excuse me." And the owner,
who used the guild newsletter list as her new mailing list *grrrrrrr*
is annoying in person, too (after annoying me w/ her emails).
She stands in the front room and yells to the customers, or at us,
reminding us of sales, upcoming sales, her opinions on whatever;
you can't think of what you were trying to remember, can't concentrate,
that yell makes your eyes roll around in your head which makes it
difficult to read books and patterns.
Thing is, I've been to other shops that are pretty much like this one,
too small, too unprofessional (it doesn't hurt to greet people who do
come into the shop), too...too.. well, too much not-ready-for-business.
I hope she makes it (I hope she moves to a bigger, more accessible
space), but just like a couple of people I used to work for SOME people
just don't know how to run a business, or how to keep up.
YMMV

Ragmop/Sandy--quilt shop appreciator ;-D

Well, on the other side of the coin, I just heard that a new quilt shop is
due to open in July on High Street in Burlington, NJ. I shop at them all!
Although I do my share of online shopping, it so much nicer to fondle the
fabric to see how it feels and match colors when needed. I am in the need
of froggie fabric for a baby boy due in early august. They are doing the
nursery in frogs which I think is kinda cute - baby's soon-to-be Grandma is
not too keen on the idea, but asked for a froggie quilt. So, I'm on the
hunt. I think I will use the potato chip pattern to get it done lickity
split.

Polly, lat time you put out the "buy, buy, buy" email, I bought all 'gator
fabrics (gee, I wonder what THAT was used for!), now it's frogs. You seem
to bring out the "animal" in me!!! hehehehehe

I have a stack of really nice-looking hatboxes here in my sewing room.
(from Winterthur, I think and they hide all sorts of Good Stuff.) One is
labeled 'fun'. I noticed just last night that there is an entire symphony
of very happy frogs gathering in there. Would you like some fussy-cuts or
are you needing big yardage? I'd be glad to send you a few croakers. And
what in the world is the potato chip pattern? Polly

Hi Alice, What exactly is a Potato Chip pattern? My DD is using frogs for
her baby's room too. She has be a "frog" nut since she was a kid. I got
quite a few at the quilt show and Ebay had some too.

I just got the "Potato Chip" quilt pattern in Judy Sisneros book 9 Patch
Pizazz. My Adult Ed teacher is going to teach us in Quilt Camp next month.
This link will give you an idea
http://www.judysisneros.com/9PatchPizzazz.htm Supposedly you can make the
quilt top in a day or so.

Default Another quilt shop closing! Sad, very, very sad!

The pattern I am using is called the "Potato Chip" quilt because it claims
you can't make just one! The one I am doing uses two basic colors. The
quilt top uses large squares of each color or fabric type framed by the
opposite color. The framed blocks are then arranged in an alternating
pattern. It has an inner border of an accent color and then a large outer
border made from one of the main fabrics. The pattern uses a yard of each
of the main colors, then borders and backing. It looks like it will go
together rather quickly.

I found some yummy frog fabrics on equilter so I may order those, but thanks
for the offer Polly.
