Default fabric from Egypt

sound yummy? ;-)

A friend of mine is going to Egypt in January and has asked if she buys
fabric there, if I will make her a quilt. She'll pay me for my time, plus -
I get to keep leftovers. So, I'm figuring a baby quilt would do.... ;-)

Seriously now.... she asked if I only work with 100% cotton and what did I
think about their cotton silks. Now, I'm sitting here drooling over the
colours that she could bring back. I'm not an earthy colour person, but I
can only imagine how powerful those colours are from there so I'm looking
forward to working with them. I'm imagining startling copper, deep greens...
but I never thought about the type of fabric. It sounds like a high quality
cotton silk would be a dream to work with - but I don't want to steer her
wrong either in case it's not.

What should I tell her? Stick with cottons, or if the cotton silks are nice,
to go with them?

I can't believe how much I'm looking forward to seeing what she brings back!

Marijke, in cold..... Montreal

Cotton silk IS 100% cotton: it's just treated to behave and look like
silk.

Well there you go then!! LOL I had no idea...but then again, there are lots
of things I have no idea about. ;-)

It's yummy to work with and washes well, but is inclined to
fray. I've used it for garment making (some of the Romeo & Juliet
dresses were cotton silk). Just plan to use wider seam allowances (1/2"
rather than 1/4") and LOTS of quilting so it doesn't shift about and
fray inside the quilt.

Thanks so much!! I'll tell her and I'm really looking forward to this.
