Tension problems are not fun. Im thinking next time I need to meddle with
that I best pour myself something wild and wet or smoke something a bit
relaxing and play with a bit of material i no longer care about. Can someone
tell me, do we fiddle with the top, then if that seems fine tune up the
screw in the bobbin case? Thats how i generally do it, but if there is a
better way I would love to know it.

My sewing machine already has a mark for the 1/4" seam. That's not my
problem. Well...it's not my main problem. LOL I start sewing and by
the time I get to the end of the 6" square, one square is sometimes up
to 1/8" longer than the other. I'm beginning to think my tension needs
adjusting. But I dread to think of messing with it. :-(

| I did a LOT of
| ripping out. How hard can it be to sew two 6" squares together?????
|
| Very hard - ask me how I know...
|
| Check your seam allowances at all the same, if you are using a quarter
| of an inch then put some masking tape on the bed of your machine 1/4
| inch away from the needle and then run the fabric alongside that
| whilst sewing, and you should get identical seams... just a thought...

| Have fun and as Miss Sairey will say, "don't forget to breathe!"

Well, Diana and others, I came to this group for, hmmm, can't remember why
or what for.

You could say I came to quilting because I was born with the quilting and
textile gene. My grandmother and all three of her daughters are textile
artists of various mediums. They have each done some quilting but my
grandmother, turned 85 on the 19th, is still quilting to this day and in the
past ten years had almost always had a quilt in progress. I started
quilting in my teens with a simple, small quilt on machine. It wasn't until
Springtime 15 years ago that I decided to start my very first quilt. It was
a broken dishes pattern using left over pieces of fabric from clothing my
mother and grandmother made along with some left over fabric from my
grandmother's quilting. That's the only thing beautiful about it. I will
be finishing this 15 year old project this week. Yesterday morning I
removed the binding I just begun to stitch onto it and put on one that does
it justice. Of course I'll have a pic for viewing as soon as possible.

I do stay because there's a lot of activity on it, very friendly, responsive
and on-topic. Also, I can't get enough of those pictures some are able to
post. I also like that it keeps me motivated to do something with my large
stash and finish up projects.

In the future I hope to find that arthritis does not exist in the hands of a
quilter, favorite fabric pieces in one's stash spontaneously multiplies as
you're about to use it for a project, more guilds will spring up making it
easier to get to one if you're not near a very large town or metro area and
a lot more younger folk and men take up the sport.

Sandy really outdid herself on this one. She must have had one of those wee
spy cameras. I wonder did she get any quilting done at all? Does anyone
happen to know where she stashed the negatives?

Actually it sounds as if the pressure foot pressure is set too high. IOW
there is too much pressure from the pressure foot on the fabric. There
should be an adjustment dial or screw somewhere on the machine.........
check your manual.

to 1/8" longer than the other. I'm beginning to think my tension needs
adjusting. But I dread to think of messing with it. :-(

Diana, if your bobbin tension is set fine then you should only need to adjust
top tension. (Unless you use a thread on the bobbin that is significantly
heavier than usual) You should learn to play wiht the top tension to use
different stitches and different top threads.

Well, Diana and others, I came to this group for, hmmm, can't remember

why
or what for.

You could say I came to quilting because I was born with the quilting and
textile gene. My grandmother and all three of her daughters are textile
artists of various mediums. They have each done some quilting but my
grandmother, turned 85 on the 19th, is still quilting to this day and in

the
past ten years had almost always had a quilt in progress. I started
quilting in my teens with a simple, small quilt on machine. It wasn't

until
Springtime 15 years ago that I decided to start my very first quilt. It

was
a broken dishes pattern using left over pieces of fabric from clothing my
mother and grandmother made along with some left over fabric from my
grandmother's quilting. That's the only thing beautiful about it. I will
be finishing this 15 year old project this week. Yesterday morning I
removed the binding I just begun to stitch onto it and put on one that

does
it justice. Of course I'll have a pic for viewing as soon as possible.

I do stay because there's a lot of activity on it, very friendly,

responsive
and on-topic. Also, I can't get enough of those pictures some are able to
post. I also like that it keeps me motivated to do something with my

large
stash and finish up projects.

In the future I hope to find that arthritis does not exist in the hands of

a
quilter, favorite fabric pieces in one's stash spontaneously multiplies as
you're about to use it for a project, more guilds will spring up making

it
easier to get to one if you're not near a very large town or metro area

and
a lot more younger folk and men take up the sport.

I am a coward. Playing with the top tension sounds too much like playing
with dynamite to me.

But...... The top tension is *meant* to be adjusted. That is why it is
accessible and has numbers or whatever on it. When I learned to sew we were
told not to mess with the tension, but we also had one type of needle and one
type of thread and sewed on natural fabrics. Advances in types and sizes of
needles, threads and fabrics means that the tension needs to change to meet the
new stuff.
A zig-zag stitch needs a slightly looser tension to make a good stitch because
the thread has to cover a bit more fabric. Thicker fabric also needs a bit more
thread, and so on.
Don't be afraid of your tension dial. Remember where it is set to begin with,
you can even mark it with a dot of nail polish or marker, and go. G
