White 2999... what to do?
I just bought a White 2999 from an online dealer that I've heard good
things about. It arrived Friday, and in general I'm pleased with it... buttonholes are a breeze, it's got nifty features like needle up/down, the ability to lower feed dogs, and sewing without a pedal (whee!). But there's a few stitches that just don't look like they're supposed to, and I'm unsure what to do about it. Stitch #19 is a stretch overlock stitch, and it's supposed to look like an uppercase V with a lowercase v nested inside it. But the lowercase v doesn't connect properly, and it looks like an uppercase V with two little lines at the top. Stitch #20 is a smocking stitch and should look like squares, but when I sew it, it looks more open, like interconnected Ss (uh, that would be the letter S, plural. esses?) Stitch #24 should look like an asterisk, but the two sides don't match up. Instead it looks like two fans that are off-center. You can see pics of these stitches at http://cinaminx.com/gallery/album14 The photos aren't the greatest quality (the fabric is actually black, not brown), but you can get a general idea of what I'm talking about. There's also a photo of the machine, for comparison to what the stitches are supposed to look like. Tomorrow I'll call the place where I bought this machine and ask their advice (they're not open today), but I'd also like to hear your opinions... Is this a problem with White machines in general? This particular model? This machine specifically? I don't know whether I'll want to exchange it for another (same model) machine, or just return it and get something else. Perhaps keep it and live with the weird stitches? They do charge a 20% restocking fee if I return it because I don't like the machine, but I'm not sure if this counts as "not liking it" (I *do* like this machine in general, but I don't like the poor stitches, which I think are defective... they certainly don't come out as pictured on the machine.) Am I being too picky? Cina |

Cina, there are a couple of possibilities here.
One, the balance is slightly off. There is a balance control somewhere on the machine, usually on the back or bottom. Your manual should tell you where. Two, are you using a stabilizer when sewing these stitches? Often using the appropriate stabilizer will solve this type of problem. Three, make sure you are not pulling/pushing or holding the fabric back as these are stitching out. Since these are some of the reverse motion stitches this is very, very important. You might also need to slightly loosen the top tension for any of these stitches, as well as lighten up on the pressure foot pressure just a tad. White machines in general are very good quality machines. Check and see on the plate that has the serial number, where the machine was made. (I used to know all the White machine numbers and all, but not for the last couple of years.) White is owned by Husqvarna/Viking and some of the White machines are actually made in the H/V factory in Sweden. (I can check Tues. when I teach to get more info on Balance and such if you need me to.) Yes, I teach at a Viking/White dealership, and own Viking and White machines, but otherwise not associated, etc. Pati, in Phx Cina wrote: I just bought a White 2999 from an online dealer that I've heard good things about. Hello Cina, well I don't have the White machine, i have the Kenmore 19001,
but in my manual, it does go into the distorted patterns, it show the smocking stitch in what it is supposed to look like, and what if it is distorted somehow. well if you go to my webshots photo album, and go into the misc album, there is a pic that i scanned from my manual, so check your manual and see if you have something like my machine does. http://community.webshots.com/user/maineiacrose Good luck...Maine-iac Rose "Cina" wrote in message ... Two, are you using a stabilizer when sewing these stitches? Often using the appropriate stabilizer will solve this type of problem. Three, make sure you are not pulling/pushing or holding the fabric back as these are stitching out. Since these are some of the reverse motion stitches this is very, very important. I've tried them with stabilizer, though the fabric in the photos didn't have stabilizer. I'm pretty sure I wasn't holding the fabric too much, and on a few of the samples, I didn't hold it at all. You might also need to slightly loosen the top tension for any of these stitches, as well as lighten up on the pressure foot pressure just a tad. I've tried to adjust the tension, but not the presser foot pressure. I'll give that a try next. White machines in general are very good quality machines. Yes, I teach at a Viking/White dealership, and own Viking and White machines, but otherwise not associated, etc. I've heard that they were good machines... it was based on recommendations from others that I looked into White machines in the first place! I just checked the label on the back, and it says "Made in Taiwan." I'd appreciate if you could find out something about this balance control... I can't find anything visible for adjusting it, and suspect it's somewhere inside the plastic case. I'm not sure I'm ready to go delving in there just yet, mostly because I think that would probably void any warranties on the machine. I've got an email out to the seller; we'll see what they say. Thanks so much for your help! Cina |

That's exactly what's going on with mine. Thank you! Sadly, mine doesn't have anything in the manual covering this situation. I hope it's not something I have to take somewhere to have serviced... I just got it! I haven't even picked out a name yet! Thank you for taking the time to scan your manual! Cina |

no problem, sorry your manual doesn't show anything like that, but hopefully
when you call the place tomorrow, they can tell you what to do, instead of getting it serviced. I hate when that happens. well good luck with that, and I'll keep that pic up for a while just in case you need it for reference, or have you already saved that pic? take care, good luck...Maine-iac Rose "Cina" wrote in message Maine-iac Rose wrote: Yes! Yes, I teach at a Viking/White dealership, and own Viking and White machines, but otherwise not associated, etc. My Lily has started missing bits and not forming zigzagz properly: some stitches are OK for a whole, but gp 'off' for a few inches... Seems to be a fairly random collection! After talking to the dealer's daughter, provisional diagnosis is either a faulty step motor or the timing os off! 'Unusual' Tracy said, and 'I don't need to ask about cleaning and the like, do I?' No, she doesn't... Either way, I'm looking at it being out of commission for a while as i hope to take it for fixing tomorrow! JUST when I least need it! Luckily my mum is in Kent this week, looking after my nephews, so she has brought her machine down for me (my old Viscount). I shall be sewing, but I need mine fixed in time to do the buttonholes on these posh jackets. I don't fancy doing nearly 40 buttonholes by hand! -- Kate XXXXXX Lady Catherine, Wardrobe Mistress of the Chocolate Buttons http://www.diceyhome.free-online.co.uk Click on Kate's Pages and explore! |

Oh no problem, we went and looked at the litter, was supposed to get the
female yellow, but younger brother wanted her, and older brother, (that had the mother of the litter) decided they were not going to keep the chocolate pup, and we fell in love with her when we saw her that day. I don't recall leaving DH head out of the pic that day, guess I was just thinking about the new puppy that we would have in a few weeks. She was not just a cutie, but very lovable. the first few months, she followed me around every where, and Beash-Ka the 1st didn't want anything to do with her, well at least not the first few weeks, then she got to love the new pup also. When Ki-U was about a year old, i decided i wanted to go babysit, to have something to do, and of course to get that little bit more money for my material and yarn stash, and boy it was awful for a while, Ki-U would howl when i left. But i would get the little boy and bring him over to our apt and then she got use to me leaving her home, and knowing that i would be back soon. I see that you have some pics up at webshots, i'll get around to looking at them eventually, i have a list of others to go look at.
