Default Square pattern question

Hi all,
I remember talking about this before, but I don't remember the
particulars. If I wanted to knit a square on the diagonal, how would I do
that? Do I cast on 1 stitch and then increase to 2 stitches, continuing by
increasing at both sides every row, or do I increase only the first stitch
every row, or what? Of course, the reverse would be decreasing in the same
way, but what way is that?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Janise

Hi Janise,
I start with 2 stitches, and increase at the beginning of each row and
decrease the same way. HTH

Janise,
I simply cannot start with 1 stitch, or even 2, as Norma said she does... I
can only accomplish it by starting with THREE (yes, I'm weird! LOL!)... and
I increase ONE one EVERY row, then decrease ONE on every row.
HTH,
Noreen

Janise,
I do the increases at the beginning of every row, by doing a yarn over. To
decrease, I knit 2 together, Yarn over, knit two together at the beginning
of each row.

I cast on like Noreen with three stitches and then increase one stitch at
the end of every row,

some prefer the beginning of every row, I do the increase at the end of
each row, but some do it at the beginning of each row, some people increase
one stitch at each end of every alt row..

then when you've got to half the size you want you do the decreasing back to
three stitches again...

HTH cheers........Cher

Try www.geocities.com/gam_elan_21/knitpatt.html for a diagonally-knit
washcloth pattern. I have adapted this pattern for other stitches by
working the first four and last four stitches of each row in plain
knit (include any increases or decreases in those eight stitches), and
incorporating all stitches in between into the pattern.
