OOh Kate, you mean you actually *had* a tape drive, built in? My first computer
was one of those Radio Shack jobbies where you plugged in your tape player if you wanted a storage device. And we had to program with 1's and 0's, if we were lucky; made do with l's and O's if not, ;-^ -- Anne in CA -- thinking a treadle computer would be totally neat. You had to throw the switches to program it. DH got it, I was just baffled. The first one we had with a keyboard was a Timex Sinclair. DH did a fair old bit of programing on it, not that the programs were much of anything useful. You could save to a regular cassette deck though. Sure Charlie, I know that. :-) What I was trying to recall were
people in the ng who have been here a long time and are oceans away. I wasn't inferring that Africa was in Europe....but I knew Tutu lives there and was hoping for an answer from those across the water. my first puter was a C64. had a special tape drive.
i used to get books out of the library and spend late late nights copying programs into the keyboard and saving to tape. the commodore was cool cuz u you type it all in, run the program and when u hit a syntax error it would tell you which line and you could find it and fix it, then run it again, each time stopping at the next syntax error til you finished fixing all the typos you made in the mad rush to type in the pages and pages of programing for some silly little game. tho i did have fun as i learned what some things did by correcting them so i could change the parameters and config the program somewhat for ease of play, lol. ok ok, so it was cheating on the original program, whats your point? lol. first modem was on my new fangled 486. 'twere a 2500kb or was that 2800? whatever, it was slow but i did connect to IBMs Gateway to the K12 net and a few other bulletin boards. i learned how to install that modem myself as well. puter was out of warranty and a friend showed me how to do it and it worked too. damn i was clever back then, lol. then i upgraded to a 14.4 in the 486. then i got this puter, 6yrs old now and still plugging away with only 128ram, 12gbsHD, 350mhz speed, 56k modem. i use dial up at NZ$25 a month for up to 250hrs (only came close a couple of times) in up to 3hrs max if they are real busy then then dump you and you can dial up straight away again. tho some days i've had it connected up to 8hrs in a row without a disconnect. no limit on the amount u can download in that time either. i just cant justify being online 24/7 at the cost of it (double what i'm paying now, i think). my old brain isnt that fast anyhow, lol. jeanne lost in cyberspace somewhere over the south pacific -- http://community.webshots.com/user/nzlstar real reply is san-fran at ihug dot co dot nz nzlstar on yahoo msg'r "Diana Curtis" wrote...
