Can I make it clear that it's for the wand? In light of other portions
of
this thread I felt it should be said.

Walk softly and carry a beaded wand?

Absolutely.

Those are the 2 places in the US I have the very least interest in going to.
When I drove from Calif to Rhode Island, I went out of my way to avoid NYC.

no desire to have anything to do with the US (except buying beads and

taking

wasn't treated very nicely when I visited. The only places I'd go back to

New
York because I like cheap clothes!

Most respectable people I know in the legal professions -- prison guards,
Chief of Police, District Attorney, judges have concluded that the best way
to deal with the crime surrounding drug use is to legalize drugs.

Ah, but she's not American and it probably looks pretty baffling from a

Oh, there's a war on drugs over here too in the UK, it's just that it's a
bit of a different attitude towards the whole thing.

Here's an interesting take on the situation from the admittedly biased

Green
Party, who are extremely liberal but they make a lot of sense:

It's economics that drive such things, not civil justice.

The best tactic to date to lower drug use AND save tax money, was setting up
free treatment (including inpatient) for drugs and alcohol. It was Reagan's
idea, and help his popularity for his second term. Then he declared war and
****ed things up.

I'm not sure if it should be legal, but I think people have a right to do

it
if they want. I mean, I don't really care if other people balls their own
health up - so long as they don't clog up MY NHS doing it (which they
currently do). People who abuse their bodies should not get free health
care.

Economics and Puritan/Victorian morals. You KNOW if they could just

shrug,
legalize it and charge a huge consumption tax on it, the politicians

would
be delighted. (It's certainly beginning to work that way with

gambling.)
But
at least here in the US there are way too many "causes" who can't

quite
leave other people's indulgences alone, whatever they are. I'm not

condoning
general legalization of street drugs, BTW (though I pretty much

believe
in
Darwinism in action LOL), but pointing out that it's a bit more

complicated
than pure economics.

Well, it is definitely more than pure economics but everything boils

down
to
money one way or another. The poppy fields in Afghanistan could and

should
be shut down but it boils down to money there too.

I never realized until I came to the UK just how much they benefitted

from
all the Puritans leaving in a snit (yeah, and the Mayflower too...) The

US
got guilt, the English got maypoles. Not exactly a fair result, at

least
for everyone over there in the US.

Personally I have no problem with legalizing marijuana, if it's treated

like
alchol then great, tax the hell out of it and use the money to fund

schools.

Whaddya mean could? Of course that's what they're used for!

Used to have some pretty glass pipes myself - back in the days when you could
visit the headshops in Georgetown. G

By "could" I mean, some of them are impractical for use and are intended
only as display pieces.

When I lived on Lopez Island, tourists (American, mostly)were viewed
with extreme suspicion; people used to tell the story of when the
tourist family had a PICNIC on Gail's front lawn, and left chicken bones
in her yard. They thought the whole island was some kind of big, cute
park.

Of course, most tourists aren't like that... they're polite and
unobtrusive and don't make any sort of impression at all.

That's like Americans in general. You don't really remember the 500 who
were quietly polite, but no way would you EVER forget the jackass who
laughed in your face and mocked you for pronouncing aluminum the British
way. (We hate that guy too, BTW.)

Its a shame really. There is a lot more to like about the united states than
just our beads and customers who want your maille. Really. :-)
