New to sewing, can you suggest a machine for my needs?
Hi,
I'm do crafts mainly. Currently I do not have a sewing machine. I need a sewing machine that will sew through 2-3 pieces of nylon webbing, similar to back pack strap. Would I need a heavy duty machine or will just any machine do? Anybody have any suggestions on what kind of machine or where the best place to buy a used one is? Thanks, Chris |

I sure wouldn't use a regular plain ol', plain ol' sewing machine for that. How much do you want to spend and how much room do you have? If you want an electric machine and want it mainly for doing this type of thing, a Sailrite machine is probably what you need, but they don't necessarily come cheap (check allbrands.com or else google for Sailrite, or maybe it's hyphenated). Alternatively, a treadle sewing machine would do it for sure. If you only have short pieces of that to do, a hand sewing awl will serve you nicely. That's all my dad ever used. |

Hi Chris:
You don't say where you're from so I don't know how much my advice will help, but here goes: Go to several sewing machine dealers with webbing in hand and a size 100 or 110 package of good quality machine needles. Explain what you are looking for and pay attention to their response. A regular domestic machine should suit you fine - especially if it is a "jeans machine" which is supposed to be built a little tougher. None of my machines have ever had trouble with what you are describing - as long as I had an appropriate needle in place. Cynthia "Chris" wrote in message oups.com... Hi, I'm do crafts mainly. If so, I'd take it to an upholstery or shoe repair place and have them sew it. Kay |
