Default sewing machine

I need your input on buying a sewing machine. It needs to be relatively
trouble free, reasonable price, simple to use, simple to repair and a
real work horse. Any ideas???

The posting FAQ for this group includes the following:

There is a "what machine should I buy" FAQ.

Perhaps it will help you decide.

Try, try, try again - that is, demo lots - chose once!
Only you can chose the best machine for yourself because each of us has our
own individual quirks to sewing. Some avid sewers prefer the older models
of machines while others like lots of bells and whistles. We also have
brands we love and brands we hate based on our own unique sewing styles -
why do you think that there are so many brands out there?!
What you are describing though does sound like an older machine and I would
suggest buying a good one second-hand. Does your community have a radio
'swap n shop'? Try there or in the classifieds of your local paper if you
live in a smaller community.
If you are looking for a new machine, then I would run (not walk!) from any
of the bottom end offerings from pretty well any of the manufacturers. Most
of the middle of the road machines from any of the major sewing machine
companies are worth what you pay for them but it is up to you to chose the
one with the ease of use and features that suit you best.
The only other advice that I can give is pick a dealer that you trust. A
good dealer (read also repair service) is worth their weight in gold. A bad
dealer makes one consider the option of justifiable homicide!
