Progress on BOM quilt top
I just orderedthe DVD from sewthankful.com .They have an offer and mine was
$24.29. Looking forward to getting it! "Carole-Retired and Loving It" wrote in message news The DVDs are kind of pricey - $29.95, but there is so much helpful information on them that I decided that it was worth buying a couple of them. She has video clips from each DVD, ranging from about 3 minutes to 10 minutes on her website, so that you can get a pretty good idea of what you are buying. She also has free downloads of the designs from each DVD and once you've got the techniques, you can pretty much figure out how to do the designs from the other DVDs. She's also nice and helpful. I e-mailed her through "The Quilt Show" since she is a member. I sent her a link to a picture that showed what I already knew how to do and asked for her advice as to which DVD I might find the most helpful. She answered back promptly and she was the one who suggested I might not need the DVD at all, just the free downloads of her patterns. No affiliation here but the site is http://www.patsythompsondesigns.com and then you click on the Instruction DVD section (or something similar to that.) Carols:
Your feather quilting compliments the piecing nicely. I understand how you marked and then went free hand, but have a question. Do you do one side of the spine completely, then quilt the other side; or, do you go back and forth? I'd game to try the free-motion feathers, so will appreciate your comments. Thanks, PAT in VA/USA "Carole-Retired and Loving It" wrote in message news ..............and now I'm doing freeform free-motion feathers in the sashing strips. I'm marking the spine line with chalk, but that's the only marking required, so they go pretty quickly! Wow! I love those feathers, Carole - the large with a few small fitted
in - it looks beautiful. I haven't been a fan of feathers, but I really like this variation. Thanks for sharing. .. In message , Carole-Retired and Loving It writes I've managed to layer and pin the quilt top/backing/batting sandwich. I've stitched in the ditch (or as close as these hands and eyes can manage) and now I'm doing freeform free-motion feathers in the sashing strips. I'm marking the spine line with chalk, but that's the only marking required, so they go pretty quickly! (No longarm, no midarm, no stitch regulator....sigh.) I've finished five strips and only have about a bazillion more to do. By the time I finish those I may have decided what to do inside the cornerstones, the blocks themselves, and for the border!!! http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/...46414451niijtx Carole D. - Retired and loving it in the foothills of NW Georgia My quilts, crafts, QIs, and more - http://home.windstream.net/caroledoyle -- Best Regards pat on the hill |

I mostly go from side to side. Patsy's DVDs say to go wherever you
have the most space available. When you're doing curves, sometimes you need to put two plumes on an outer curve before doing the plume on the inner curve. I'd suggest going to her DVD section at http://www.patsythompsondesigns.com and just watching the free clips. You can actually learn quite a lot just from watching those. Thanks! I like these because the plumes are varied and they have a
more free-flowing look that the traditional feathers that are all the same size. Plus, they're much easier to do when you don't have to worry about the size! Well, sure that makes perfect sense. I like the look you've achieved,
because it is not static or too formal. The traditional, formal, feather borders and wreaths are certainly lovely, but not quite right for my more casual style of patchwork. Thanks! You might want to go look at the videos on her website about vines and
leaves. They use the same general idea but are more contemporary and informal than the feathers. I think I will end up using some of them on this quilt, too.
