Depends on the size of the lap. Big Man with big lap, big quilt. Little kid
with little lap, little quilt

Hullo Jane
I'm not going to say it depends on the size of the lap. LOL
But, it does depend on what it is going to be used for. If it is for
someone sitting in a chair (or a wheel chair) they do not need to be as
large as if someone wants a quilt to cuddle on the couch under. The
former could be 36" square (a small one) or up to 48". For the couch
cuddler, it could be almost the size of a single bed quilt? It probably
should be rectangular, rather than square, for that purpose.

54 inches by 72 inches is a good size for a lap quilt.

I usually try to make the front no wider than the width of the backing fabric.
I hate to have a seam in the back for just a few inches more on the front.
Lazy, I guess?
