Default My day!

Hey Carla,
Sad to say but I've had those kind of days too. I can sympathize with
you for sure. On the bright side of this when it works and it will, it
will feel great!. I just finished up my second machine quilted quilt and
it went waaay to smooth. I am giving my first machine quilted lap quilt
away but it is with a little sadness cause it felt so great to actually
finish it!
I recommend taking a break for a bit and then tray tackling it again
when the frustration level lowers.Earl Grey Tea and a toasted Persian
from my secret hiding place works for me.
P.S. It could very well be the wrong phase of the moon. Full moon is on
Sunday

Since I spent two days pulling out my mistakes, I decided today was the day
to start quilting afresh.

Everything went wrong that could go wrong! I am not only learning how to
operate a new fancier machine that I am not used to, but I had to figure out
how to install the walking foot. This proved to be quite a challenge as I
had never seen one before and the directions and pictures were not very
clear (maybe the French version was better but unfortunately, I don't speak
French).

After an hour of pulling my hair and muttering to myself, I finally figured
it out and realized the presser foot had to be down before the needle lined
up perfectly.

Then I discovered I had bought the wrong thread. Got the new thread and
proceeded to roll my quilt and attach bicycle clips. Guess what? I had
only purchased one set...too dumb to know that I needed more than two. :-(

OK, so now I do a sample three tier sandwich and everything looks good so I
start to quilt. Yippee!! It is actually working.

This was before I tried rewinding my bobbin thread and didn't notice that it
was not doing it correctly and it wound its way around the post, which took
me almost 1/2 hour to get off.

Then my scissors fell apart. My favorite snips gone. Guess I will order a
new pair when I order some more bicycle clips.

Then the new spool of thread snarled and snapped and I started all over
again.

Oh, did I mention that I keep getting lost in my quilting design??? I was
told to only quilt in one direction so that means there is a lot of stopping
and starting on the Split Rail design.

Is it me? Is the moon in the wrong phase?

I am determined I WILL finish this quilt, come heck or high water.

Now aren't you happy to read to the bottom of this lament?

Please say a little prayer for me as I continue this fiasco tomorrow bright
and early. I just had to give up today;my back is killing me.

This is the kind of day my Grandma would make 'sammichs--a quart jar of
Kool-Aid'- and walk over to our house (1/4 mile)and a few of us kidlets
(the ones that weren't watching the cows/babies/etc) and we would go for
a hike to the woods......pick whatever was in season and walk back
home--unless it was a pah'tickler kind of day then Grandpa would drive
on down about supper time with a few more sammiches/Kool-aid/and the
fishin poles and we all would go fishin til dark. ((Did help that we had
a stream of fresh water going thru the back woods ; ))

Do hope your tomorrow is better than today

Butterfly (thanks for a pleasant trip down memorylane)

Bad luck, Carla
That really is a chapter of accidents. I suspect we all have to have
one of those 'initiation ceremonies'.
I think another couple of practice 'sandwiches' might be a good way to
go. I still do at least one every time. The size makes a significant
different of course, but it still helps.
About the bobbin - it is quite a good idea to wind several bobbins at
the one time - before you start sewing, so that, when you are 'on a
roll' you can just slip a new one in without too much hold up.
I didn't quite understand what you meant about quilting in only one
direction? And, when you say stopping and starting, do you mean
stopping to turn or finishing off the thread? Stopping to turn is OK,
but there should be no reason to finish thread?
Good luck with your next attempt. Keep the determination going!!

Forget the bicycle clips. Just roll up the quilt, fling the long roll over
your shoulder and "go to town" with your quilting. I tried the bicycle
clips, didn't like them, gave them away. Bigbearlady

I'm sorry you are having such a rough time of it! I am proud of you for
sticking with it, and you should be proud of yourself too!

Here's how I go about machine quilting:

fill three bobbins

dust lint out of sewing machine

new needle in the sewing machine

put appropriate foot onto sewing machine

figure out most efficient method of quilting that involves the lowest
number of stops and starts. Sometimes the pattern will connect so that
I zig zag across the quilt diagonally, sometimes up and down other times
across. You _don't_ need to only quilt in one direction.

roll up the quilt - you don't _need_ the clips if you check the archives
you will find lots of different methods posted. Sometimes I roll the
edges, sometimes I accordian fold them; depends on my mood and what
works with the quilting I'm doing.

Set the timer...this way I get up and walk around the room every half
hour or so. Often I will do laundry the day I quilt so that I have to
get up and move the loads of clothes and take some time to fold what
just came out of the dryer. So, the clothes get clean and put away and
I have to move once in a while so I don't get stiff.

have tasty snacks on hand. machine quilting is an aerobic activity :-)
so you need yummy things to keep your energy up!

keep us posted on how it's going. Wishing you better luck today.

Gee, I never thought of quilting as an aerobic exercise. No wonder I was so
tired.
This has been a wonderful thread, I hate to let it go...but I am about 1/2
finished quilting and today went rather smoothly until we lost power for a
couple of hours and I sat there waiting to resume.
Now, as for the snacks while quilting, I haven't gotten around to that yet,
but you can bet I will in the future. A gal has got to keep up her
strength.
I knew I didn't like those bicycle clips, they keep getting caught on the
edge of the table and they do "Clank". LOL
Well, onward and upward.
Thanks Folks.
You really came through for me, now I have to plan my next one..I would like
a seashore or fish theme for my son the avid outdoors man. Any
suggestions!!
Remember now, I am still a novice at this stuff.

Actually, the moon was void of course yesterday when Carla was
trying to get a go on her quilting. Her day was typical of the havoc
these days might bring. Good days to regroup and read a book! Fukl
moons really aren't a problem unless they are aspecting you adversely.

Yes, this is the full moon. you may be a person that cannot tackle big
projects then. A good friend of mine is like that. He calendars staff
meetings around the moon phases, since he is a basket case at full
moon, not able to get anything positive done at work.

Have a peace-filled/piece-filled day,

Hullo Carla
I have seen, in a magazine, a marvellous seaside quilt. It is probably
a bit childish for your son, but could easily be adapted. The reason
I'm mentioning it, though, is because it was done in rows, rather than
blocks etc. To give you an idea: there was a row of beach umbrellas; a
row of beach huts (probably uniquely British!); shells, fish, starfish
too I think. The rows were different widths, so the whole thing was
completely adaptable to the individual. The rows could be made with
different kinds of fish - abstract or realistic depending, pieced or
appliqué. You could have some trees, if he 'does' other outdoor stuff.
The rows would have a strip of sashing between (helps define - and makes
it grow quicker too!!).
Your imagination would be the main limiter here! What do you think?

I agree with you Phyllis, but I go another step and don't even roll the
quilt. I just stuff it in the opening and then quilt away. I find the roll
makes it too stiff and I find it actually harder to handle that way.

Forget the bicycle clips. Just roll up the quilt, fling the long roll over
your shoulder and "go to town" with your quilting. I tried the bicycle
clips, didn't like them, gave them away. Bigbearlady

Those of you who read my previous posts know that I am struggling with

my
first machine quilt.
Since I spent two days pulling out my mistakes, I decided today was the

day
to start quilting afresh.

Everything went wrong that could go wrong! I am not only learning how

to
operate a new fancier machine that I am not used to, but I had to figure

out
how to install the walking foot. This proved to be quite a challenge as

I
had never seen one before and the directions and pictures were not very
clear (maybe the French version was better but unfortunately, I don't

speak
French).

After an hour of pulling my hair and muttering to myself, I finally

figured
it out and realized the presser foot had to be down before the needle

lined
up perfectly.

Then I discovered I had bought the wrong thread. Got the new thread and
proceeded to roll my quilt and attach bicycle clips. Guess what? I had
only purchased one set...too dumb to know that I needed more than two.

:-(

OK, so now I do a sample three tier sandwich and everything looks good

so
I
start to quilt. Yippee!! It is actually working.

This was before I tried rewinding my bobbin thread and didn't notice

that
it
was not doing it correctly and it wound its way around the post, which

took
me almost 1/2 hour to get off.

Then my scissors fell apart. My favorite snips gone. Guess I will

order
a
new pair when I order some more bicycle clips.

Then the new spool of thread snarled and snapped and I started all over
again.

Oh, did I mention that I keep getting lost in my quilting design??? I

was
told to only quilt in one direction so that means there is a lot of

stopping
and starting on the Split Rail design.

Is it me? Is the moon in the wrong phase?

I am determined I WILL finish this quilt, come heck or high water.

Now aren't you happy to read to the bottom of this lament?

Please say a little prayer for me as I continue this fiasco tomorrow

bright
and early. I just had to give up today;my back is killing me.

Carla

I know it isn't polite, but I AM just LAUGHING, Carla! I suspect every
single ONE of us has had a machine-quilting day like that! Ragmop, of
course, will snort and say "just hand-quilt it" ...

But I'm glad you're doing your practice squares!
