Shop around the corner? Nope. There was a guy named Joe Costansa
(maybe) about 5-8 blocks away. The shop was call something Art Glass. 2 blocks south (17th stret) was a couple of studios (Cushin,Millard). Greenland was a couple of blocks north (22 street). And Rambush was on 12 street (I think) |

Don't be so testy. I just wanted to know what brand of linseed oil putty you get at hardware stores. As I said many manufactures stopped producing linseed oil putty. Even Dap. "burn down the house"? Did I say that? David Byrne said that. -- Jack Plonked by Native American bobo1148atxmissiondotcom http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/xmissionbobo/ |

I don't know what the deal is. I've been told by retailers that traditional materials like linseed oil, linseed oil putty, whiting are not selling very well. So they stop carrying them, so there is little need to manufacture them. Recently I had to go to 4 different store to fine raw linseed oil. Whiting is a special order from Janovic (a large NYC paint store). There's plenty available. Saw it at Home Depot not long ago. Some interesting info: http://www.naturalhandyman.com/iip/infxtra/inflin.shtm Not sure I agree with their definition of "boiled" though. -- Jack Plonked by Native American bobo1148atxmissiondotcom http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/xmissionbobo/ |

Lurker, very shortly returning to lurk mode, but BLO is a love/hate situation for me as a
woodworker. 99.99% of today's BLO is not boiled. It is loaded up with metals that function as a chemical dryer. The site mentioned below by the previous poster is right about the cure time for raw LO, or at least it seems like it. There is a company called 'Tried and True' that still makes and sells the old-fashioned BLO. That's right, they boil it in air to incorporate the oxygen. This oxygen begins the polymerization of the oil, and the product they sell is a partially polymerized oil as was used back in the 1700's. I have not used this specific product (experimenting with tung oil now), but it has gotten good comments on rec.woodworking. I've seen canvas protected with T&T that seems very waterproof, and the owner claimed it worked very well. You can find it at any Woodcraft store, and probably dozens of other places on the web. T&T may even have their own site. BTW, my local Borg has both raw and boiled LO and turps in quarts and gallons. Back in lurk mode.
