......sounds like you're still having trouble competing. You might try
kilnforming.

Your services might not be in as much demand, but between lamps and
windows, we do enough repairs to support at least one full time
artisan. The best income isn't the Chinese lamps. It's on leaded
panels that must be done onsite.

I'd be really interested in hearing more about the on-site repairs. How
many a month do you do? What techniques do you find useful? How do you go
about figuring out a pricing structure?

What's an example of "having" to be done onsite?

yeah...I'd like to hear about the "must be done on site" also. I've
done so many repairs in over 25 years and not a single one was a "must
be done on site".

When window removal is impossible.
When the removal is likely to cause increased damage.
When the removal cost is likely to exceed the repair cost.
When the client is willing to pay a premium to have the work done
onsite.

We've done onsite repairs for a few hundred $ that would have cost
several thousand $ to remove the window.

We've done them in both private homes and restaurants that were happy
to pay a premium to not have the window taken out.

We've done them in homes were it would be an engineering horror story
to try extracting the window.

We've done them in windows that would likely collapsed if removed.

So, how, exactly do you repair a window in-situ?

You are onto a hell of a deal. Sounds like you can charge a premium for
doing less work. Maybe you ain't as dumb as I thought.

How to do lead and glass replacement while the window remains vertical
is just one of the things Robert Weissmann will demonstrate in his
"Professional Artisan" class at Las Vegas Glass Craft Expo next March.
The class schedule should be posted pretty soon on the Expo website.
Register early - the class is likely to fill quickly.

We routinely demo in our shop how to use a propane soldering iron to
solder vertically. Drop in sometime. Even the kids here can show you
how. They can also show you how to replace a piece of glass without
cutting the lead.

I recall being told (perhaps by you?) that I was shortchanging clients
by refusing to stretch lead. That comment was as equally bogus as your
latest.
