Yes, I have done, too. I keep one of my 201s set up with an
embroidery foot and lowered feed dogs and use it for mending and
"thread painting." But I also have a Singer EU hooked up to a laptop
to do embroidery. My theory is that if it's a "one-off" I do it by
free motion. If I want identical repeats, then the Singer EU is
better. Now I have an XL6000 to play with. Which does not mean I'm
getting rid of my 201s, 101, 66s, 99s, 301s, 306, 115, 15, 128, 129,
221s, or my Pfaff 30, 332, 1475, W & G, ...well....you see what I
mean....

Oh yes, I see only too well. They follow you home too {grin}

If you're ever passing, pop in and look at my little hoard!

They cry out so piteously. I admitted I was powerless, but it didn't
seem to help. I consider it rescue, though, and not acquisition. Though
once rescued, they do need a place to stay. Sometimes people come by
and take one or more away. These people tend to be TreadleOnions.

There's a coffe&chocolate coloured 401G (I think... ) calling to me from
the sewing machine shop, but I need to do something about the
serger/overlocker first, and I want that Elna Lotus...

still like to know why.

Because the motor isn't strong enough.

Then send some of them to Leeds, quick. I looked at the Treadle On
classifieds, but everyone seemed to be in the US - and these things
are too damned heavy to post.

The people, I mean! Not more machines!

Free range people through the post?

Yelp!! I always have my Athena up for buttonholes - push a button and push
the peddle and it's done. The Bernina just can't do that.

I have a brother 8200 and a Bernina 1630. I have to say that the
regular sewing stitches and the buttonholes on the brother are as
good, and often better than on the Bernina.

Nope. Desgner-maker, an ex-techy who ran away to join the circus (well,

I hope nobody misinterpreted what I said as saying exactly that. I just
said that you won't consistently find a durable, reliable machine at
Walmart, as they tend to carry bottom-of-the-line stuff, and for the
same money or possibly only a little more, you would have a lot better
chances getting an older reconditioned machine at a sewing machine store
and have a lot better customer service and support than you would get at
Walmart.

For one thing, you do not get dealer support. If you buy from a dealer,
you
get lessons and other help. Walmarts record on warranty issues isn't so
hot
either.

You get what you pay for.

Here's what I got when I paid $5,700 for my Viking D1. I got no dealer
support and I got no lessons. Yes, both were offered. But they held classes
once a year and I had just missed it. By the time the next year's classes
rolled around, I had lost interest in going.

I ended up getting warrantee work done at the next dealer "up the road".
Meaning I drove 400 miles round trip. Twice.

In this day and age, customer support and service is not what it used to be.

I would never look down on ANYONE for buying a machine from Wal-Mart. And
unless your uncle is the used sewing machine salesman and was actually
recommending a good used machine, I believe I would just pass. For the same
reason that I don't buy used cars.

Cindy
