I think of affluent people as those power couples were both make over
100K - they live in Manhattan, wear clothes that cost more than my rent
and only eat out.... must be watching too much TV )

I guess it depends where you live. You cannot get a decent house here
for less than... 250K, to be conservative. You need more than 80K a year
to be able to afford a mortgage!

on average Kim, on average... some must spend way more to compensate for
the occasionally dedicated quilters - or those people that quilt from
their stash! just keep repeating that to yourself and you'll feel better )

Marissa
who IFRC has not spent anything on quilting yet this year but bought a
new SM in late nov. that kid of compensates for that..... :O)

Hmmm........ dedicated quilters spend $500 on quilting stuff a year.
My hubby would be happy if that was all I spent. But, as I have
pointed out, therapy is considerable more expensive.

I'm 43, and made my first doll's quilt (that came out properly) when I
was 10.

I got mine at the gift shop for the Underground Tour. I'll bet you could
call them and get one by mail. http://www.undergroundtour.com/ has the
contact info.

And I often wear my shirt about the Seattle Seamstress Union to shows and
guild. Always a great conversation starter!

Oh, you don't want to go there!

I once took the underground tour in Seattle, where they talked about
(among other things) the sewing machine ladies in the city. Around the
turn of the last century, when Seattle was primarily a logging town, the
population was mostly single men.

One ambitious young woman decided to bring some ladies into town and
start a sewing business, to tend to the men's needs. The business was
quite successful, and the city's fathers wanted to tax the sewing
machines, in order to make a profit for themselves. They didn't make a
dime, but they DID collect the taxes on ALL the machines in the
business...

Yeah, my husband says that's where he used to go hang out to pick up
loose women. Because, he wanted to find out more about the stitch in
the ditch. That was until he got arrested and thrown in jail. Yeah he
got caught and they said "Book him, Dano!" And Dano said, "It looks
like we got this case all sewed up!"

And, of course, I should have changed the subject line long ago.

52 in a couple weeks. Been quilting for ~35 years.

I'm amazed by the ages in this thead. I kinda figured there were a bunch
"youngsters" in the group.

It's gratifying to know I'm still a youngster.

36, first quilt made around the age of 9. Only did it occassionally for
a long time, serious about it about 4 years now.
