Default update on grandson

Hi all
I asked for prayers about 10 days ago for a 9 yr old grandson facing open
heart surgery.
Well the surgery was yesterday and he is now in ICU and expected to recover
from the surgery just fine.
What the outcome will be for the long term, and the quality of life, I guess
we will just have to wait and see.

Apparently, instead of replacing his heart valve, which had been the plan
when they went in, they repaired the old one. Prognosis by the specialist is
that the repair should last between 2 and 7 years. This hopefully will give
him time to grow and maybe be stronger. If they had replaced a valve I guess
there would have been tissue rejection problems and the drugs to prevent it,
and they would still have had to redo the surgery in a few years and the
replacement valve would not grow at the same rate he would. The bad part is
that he will still be on restricted activities.

Thanks for all of the prayers and good thoughts. He and his family could
still use a few more as they cope with the recovery stage over the next few
weeks. He is expected to be in hospital 12 days, and the hospital is an
hours drive from home.

Thanks again

Marilyn, I missed your original post on this, but will certainly be
praying for this little guy. I offer encouragement as great things are
being done in the field of cardiology. I had an aortic valve
replacement a year ago, for a birth defect that went undetected for
over 60 years. I elected to have a titanium valve put in, as it will
not need additional surgery for replacement for years and years.
Because I am "young" (yeah, right) this is what they recommended, and
although I take coumadin because of the titanium, I still felt it the
best choice possible. To do nothing, I would not have survived. I am
doing great now, and so will your grandson. As for restricted
activities, you can still count your blessings. He can at least do
activities. My son of 41 is restricted to a wheelchair due to MS, but
still counts his blessings. Think positive, he will do well, even
though these are scary days for you all. The first days are the
toughest. I will keep on praying for you all, and God will take care of
your grandson. Love and hugs to you all. Karen

Thanks for the update, Marigold. Glad your grandson is doing okay, and
expected to recover with no problems. It sounds like his heart valve is a
complicated issue. I'm sorry he will still be restricted--but maybe not as
restricted as he was?

We've been holding that little guy close, Marilyn, and so very grateful that
he's made it through the surgery. Yes, indeed, progress in cardiology is
beyond comprehension. Thank you so much for sharing your good news with us.

Good news and maybe he'll have that chance now to gain strength so he'll be
ready when he has to get the replacement. Prayers continue.
