Yesterday I went to a Building Planning Appeal by a local builder who
wanted to cram 5 houses into a plot suitable for perhaps 3, and had been
refused permission (there is a system whereby you can appeal and a govt.
adjudicator has the final say).

The builder's lawyer read an e-mail sent by a clerk in the Environmental
Officer's office, thanking the builder for sending in some revised plans.

The e-mail read 'Thanks for the plans, they are fine.'

The builder's side tried to make out that when she said 'They are fine'
it meant the plans had been passed, whereas she was just being chatty
and writing in the same way she would talk and really meant 'Thanks for
the plans, they are what we needed'.

A lesson that e-mails are written documents and may result in you having
a big telling off when your employer returns to the office after having
his department called incompetent in a public tribunal!
