Thread colors for MQ (long)
some time ago someone here asked about using more than
one color quilting thread on a quilt. I said that while I had never done it, I thought it would work okay. HA! I inadvertently lied. Since then I noticed that my little Down Under Santa WH has at least 4 colors of thread. Yesterday I was sorting UFOs and found more evidence of my duplicity. Now I want some advice on what color to quilt a portion of a UFO. It is a Sampler of many different 12" blocks made from HST. Each block has the same group of HST. There are two dark colors and two light colors of triangles, each paired with white. Quilt backing is Dark Blue print. So far, I have SITD the sashing in Dark Blue; all White HST have stipple in White thread. In both cases I used same color thread in top and bobbin. Back looks real interesting with white stippling. Now I wonder what to use on the color triangles. Those a Dark Blue, Maroon, Light Blue, Pink. Since all the colors are in each block I am stumped. Would White be too glaring against the dark tones? Would Dark be too dreary on the light tones? Maybe I should hunt for an appropriate multicolor thread? Our camera is broken, so I hope this description works. Thanks bunches for you advice! Hey Pat,
Wihtout having seen the top: I'd go with a variegated thread. Nancy's has a lot of different ones, just about every colour combination you can imagine and then some. Of course, if the thread matches any of the colours, you will get an effect where the quilting shows in places and not in others. So you might not want it to match too closely to any of the colours. Okay, Pat. Here's the plan. There's too much at stake here. We want joyous
success. Make a sandwich in the fastest form you can using all the colors. I'll bet you can do that. The sandwich doesn't have to be neat or esthetically pleasing (thought I could use that expression if you could say "duplicity"). Now. Test things. I agree that some choices would be glaring Or dreary. We want, "Ah. Just right". Please report back. We want to know what you decide. Polly "Hanne Gottliebsen" wrote in message ... I like Polly's idea: test everything you can think of. And may I
respectfully suggest invisible thread? There's a place for everything! As for those triangles, if you can find a variegated thread with most of the same (or similar, or blending) colors in it, I'd go for that! Of course, I love variegated threads, but I think it would solve the problem of the white being too glaring or the dark being too dreary. Why don't you send it to me so I can see it, since your camera is broken? Of course, I'd prefer to see it after it's finished.... Still, in keeping with the title you bestowed upon me, I feel it's my duty to inspect this piece and give you the best opinion I can. g -- Sandy in Henderson, near Las Vegas my ISP is earthlink.net -- put sfoster1(at) in front http://home.earthlink.net/~sfoster1 AKA Dame Sandy, Minister of Education |

Okay, now I have a goal when I am browsing in Nancy's
on Friday evening... look for thread. That should keep me out of trouble with fabric! The reason I will be there? A Sue Nickels Lecture and Dessert! Way cool. You and Roberta are right. This needs to be tested. I
will TRY to make a sandwich of those fabrics, or a reasonable facsimile. (Dang, I love these half dollar words!) The UFO is so OLD that I am not sure if I even have samples of the pastels in the stash. Thanks to both of you. PAT in VA/USA Polly Esther wrote: Okay, Pat. Here's the plan. Nope! I even thought about that last night as I emailed some other quilt
photos to a friend. Maybe I should encourage a collective shout for pictures?
