If you read about the Inca . you will see that the king whose clothes
were made by collecting a 1/10 th of each Crop of cottons , 1/10 of
each spun thread and woven cloth . Wore a set of clothing Only once
and than it was burned , reasoning that he was a God . But in fact it
might have been an inducement for better and more efficient
production. Many tradition have mainly an economical reason. Some
have a psychological reason. And some might be Sanitary.

Point taken. I suppose we'd have to know more about which tradition this custom
originates from. Is this just their family, or is it a cultural thing connected
to antiquity? These are the things we'd first need to know.
