Default DIY Glass Cutting Question

I recently came into posession of several very large sheets of 1/2" thick
glass. How do I safely cut this? I know I can't score and break it like
thinner stuff.

You are half right Jon!!
With thick glass you score exactly as with any other glass but the
breaking will require more force, courage and ingenuity!
Only do straight line scores a few inches away from an edge - 6" or
more is easier than just a couple of inches if it is a big piece of
glass.
The simplest method is to break it over an edge by raising the edge of
the glass a foot or so then cracking it down onto the table edge with
the score line on the edge of the table. Make sure you keep hold of
the cut-off piece of glass as it will break off in one go.
You can achieve the same result if you put a long piece of dowel (sort
of wooden rod) under the score line and thump the start of the score
line hard with one fist each side of the score line and an inch away
from the line - just like putting a matchstick under a piece of 1/8"
glass with a straight score line scratched, and pressing down with
your thumbs.
Dont bother trying to cut curves unless you have the use of a band
saw, ringsaw or similar.

just a note, if the glass is tempered, it will shatter into hundreds of
chips. If it is safety glass it will have a small mark in a corner and will
necessitate cutting through a 'membrane' halfway through . m

If it's safety glass, I'll be in heaven. That stuff is -really- not cheap,
and my dad's been wanting to get some of it. I'm fairly certain it's just
regular glass though.
