Wow, I'm always amazed at how many people suffer with migraines. I
only started getting them in my late 30s. I've never heard of the
bananas - I'll try that out!

Connie, I really worry about that much excedrin too, it sounds like so
much. Have you tried other medications? I have both Maxalt or Zomig
though I prefer Maxalt. They make me a bit druggy but not bad. If it's
a bad headache I go for Imitrex but only if I don't have to work or
drive to get home - that drug works sooo well but really makes me
loopy and distant. I also have memory loss and have "lost" whole
evenings if it was a 2-pill imitrex migraine. But I've found that the
drugs have different effects so maybe there's a prescription drug that
will work for you and not make you too druggy.

Also - if any of you use imitrex as well as other prescription drugs
like I do... I was warned by my doctor NOT to take a mix of imitrex
and any other Rx drug for migraines. I had been following up a Maxalt
with an imitrex if it got bad and I got in deep doo-doo by my doc for
that. It can have some horrible consequence...

No, my doctor basically is one of those "I have the medical degree and you
don't -- so shut up and do as I say." But he's the one specialist on my plan
in my area (when it comes to good medical care we're in the boonies -- but
if you want to see naked women, or get stinking drunk, we've got you
covered!) ... I'm looking for a new doc, but meanwhile ...

Anyway, when I asked about side effects, other meds, etc, he said (and I
quote) "No, Topomax is the best and it's what I prescribe."

Once more, I *am* looking for a new doctor. Even if I have to drive 40 miles
(twice a week), I'll do it! :/

Can I ask what you're taking? I'm near desperate. Haven't had a
record-breaker (or plate, cup or chair breaker) in a few months, but I'm due
.... and the Excedrin, while it takes the edge off the migraines does
*horrible* things to my stomach! :/

Have you talked to your doctor about the side effects? Luckily the first
drug my doc tried on my did the trick, with virtually no side effects, but
he stressed to me that there are a LOT of drugs out there for migraines,

and
often several need to be tried before just the right one is found.

I'm so sorry that you're going through that!!! How are you doing????!!!

I appreciate you warning me, Leslie, but I have tried *everything* and the
only thing my current doc will prescribe just messes me up. I'm like a
walking zombie on this stuff ... and it's to be taken *every day* so I can't
even be a good mommy to my kiddos. If it were the kind that I could take

Hello All

There seems to be a new rash of Trolls, Phishers, Hackers and

whatever
else
on the prowl the last week. I just wanted to send out a warning to

be
ever
vigilant. My PayPal account was hacked, and I haven't used it in 8
months.
Caught it right away and put a stop payment on my savings account and

a
claim in to PayPal. They acknowledged a whole new rash or stuff last
week.
Still dealing with it and it looks like I'm not out any money other
than
the
stop payment fee.

Another new scam is targeting emails and sending a legit sounding

email
that
you're on vacation with a school trip, etc., and have had your
purse/wallet
stolen and need money to get home, etc. It's not an all out spam

since
it
seems to only be using your email address book and is written in a

down
home
manner. Have had several friends hit with this.

Now the whine. Why do principals, in all their infinite wisdom,

allow
a
two
day basketball tournament to be held at school, at the end of the

quarter
when grades are due, and the two days before spring break? Please,
please,
explain this to me. I really need to know and understand this. So
between
the endless pleas to get out of class and go watch the games, the

noise
of
the announcer, buzzers, and cheerleaders coming out the doors from

the
gym
right upstairs to my room, I have a migraine. It seems to be only a
one
pill migraine, but that is enough so I am off to have a small sip of
coca-cola and some dark chocolate. In moderation, along with the
drugs,

I
should be better in another couple of hours. Just the last thing I
need
to
deal with.

But I still have to pack to fly out tomorrow night. We are off to
Knoxville
to see the sights and my Sis and BIL and I have to pull something

together
to have to sew on the plane and in the airport and in the timeshare

in
the
evening. I can't go a week without something to sew. I'd be in

major
withdrawal. Bert would roll his eyes at that one.

Anyways, beware and thanks for letting me whine.

It says "Not to exceed 2 caplets in 24 hours, unless directed by a
physician."

But honestly, I've been taking about 6 on "good days" and probably as high
as 14 on "bad days." Fortunately, the good days have exceeded the bad days
here lately ("good days" being where I can still function).

I also probably drink 3 Cokes a day ... and I smoke about ... 10 cigarettes
at worst, 5-6 at best. I don't know how they all interact with each other
(and I probably don't *want* to know) ...

Having looked at what it contains, I'm surprised the maximum in a day is
2, the acetaminophen (tylenol) is the drug in it that has a narrow gap
between the therapeutic dosage and the toxic dosage, but the max advised
dose in a day is 4g, which is the amount in 16 excedrin migraine
tablets. I think it must be to do with the caffeine, which has a much
wider range where there are significant, even risky side effects before
it becomes toxic. Plus with the caffeine there are more risks in the
long term. All the active ingredients are available separately, I think
there one of the other excedrins has the same without the caffeine.
Caffeine on it's own is in a different section in the drug store, it's
got names such as "Keep Alert", "Pep Back" etc. you could try them
separately and see if you can keep the caffeine component down.

Cheers

Your doctor is such a jerk! I'm so sorry

Topomax has to be taken every day doesn't it? Maxalt, Zomig and
Imitrex are only taken at first sign of a migraine - so even if it
does make you loopy, it's just temporary. Two co-workers agree that
Imitrex kicks butt - we all take it - though it has more side
effects. One co-worker who gets really bad ones - like you experience
I think, also had beta-blockers suggested by her doctor. You take
those every day as a preventative but I think there are other side
effects of this drug (often used for heart conditions and hypertension
if I remember correctly) and there can be complications getting off
them. She decided not to go that route.

I hope you can find a new doctor soon. But also - he is technically
working For you - he's a Service Provider. Topomax is not working for
you and he has to prescribe something else. I think I'd try fighting
him if you can. I work with doctors and I know...some are angels and
others need a really hard kick in the "tush"!

(((((( Connie )))))))))))))

Poor baby....I don't know if there is any way you can find better
medical care but I hope you can. There are so many good migraine
treatments. What finally worked for me is Imitrex nasal spray. It
works within 20 mins. and you only use it if you have a migraine. The
only side effect for me is I feel a little bit spacey, but then it is
me so who knows if it's just my normal state snicker. Seriously, if
you have little ones, please look after your health for their sake. I
know how hard it is to deal with health issues when there is no good
doctor in town. Believe me I know. But the combination you describe is
a recipe for physical disaster.

Not a lecture, just worrying about a quilting buddy. And as a Mom to
Mom ...... do it for the kiddies?

I'm okay. I'm just riding it out and I don't take *anything* for arthritis
except my Ultram- trying to avoid dialysis at some future time. I can't
take any of the NSAIDS or DMARDS because of my kidney damage. They tried me
on Topamax for pain for a while and I agree it's not pleasant to take. Ugh.
(Lots of people *want* to be prescribed Topamax because it kills your
appetite- I talked to one lady who lost 180 lbs. while on Topamax- without
even trying!!!) I wish you would get another opinion and another and
another until you find a doc who has a different approach. You are much too
young to get permanent damage.

I have occasional migraines. Sometimes "low level" constant migraines.
G (those are ones just bad enough to be annoying but not totally
debilitating.) The first med I was prescribed was Midrin. I finally
figured out that was what was giving me an allergic reaction that got
worse every time it happened. Hives everywhere including inside my mouth
and on the palms of my hands, swollen everything in my head (lips like
an Ubangi, throat closing, eyes swollen almost shut, etc). When I
finally figured it out I ended up in the ER, and my doctor tossed the
rest of the pills in the Hazardous Waste container. She said it was a
serum reaction. sigh.
Now I have Cafergot for the migraines. This med has a limit of 8 pills
in a 30 day period and is basically a poison. But it works and fast,
when I need it. I was also on blood pressure medicine every day to help
prevent the headaches. (No insurance=no doctor=no prescription at the
moment. Thus the low level constant headache. sigh)

I truly sympathize with everyone who suffers from migraines. Good luck
finding a plan that works for you.

Funny how everyone with migraines experience them differently -- although
neither dark chocolate or cola are migraine triggers for me, I can't go
anywhere near either of them when I have one.

Thank goodness for migraine drugs!

I'm on Maxalt MLT. It dissolves in your mouth, which is nice because I get
horrible nausea with migraines and I don't even have to drink a glass of
water that way. You can get some info on it at http://www.maxalt.com/

So far, it has been the 'safest' for me as I usually only have to take
one--once in awhile the 2nd. AND I've only had to go to the Dr 2 x's since
I've been on it. It isn't a daily med--only when needed.

Used to use Cafergot, but it didn't have the same effect on the headache
anymore.

Butterfly (Please, ask your Dr about Axert. It works faster than Imitrex and
I can't use nose sprays as they cause INSTANT Migraines)

the
stop payment fee.

Another new scam is targeting emails and sending a legit sounding email
that
you're on vacation with a school trip, etc., and have had your
purse/wallet
stolen and need money to get home, etc. It's not an all out spam since

it
seems to only be using your email address book and is written in a down
home
manner. Have had several friends hit with this.

Now the whine. Why do principals, in all their infinite wisdom, allow
a
two
day basketball tournament to be held at school, at the end of the

quarter
when grades are due, and the two days before spring break? Please,
please,
explain this to me. I really need to know and understand this. So
between
the endless pleas to get out of class and go watch the games, the noise

of
the announcer, buzzers, and cheerleaders coming out the doors from the

gym
right upstairs to my room, I have a migraine. It seems to be only a
one
pill migraine, but that is enough so I am off to have a small sip of
coca-cola and some dark chocolate. In moderation, along with the
drugs,

I
should be better in another couple of hours. Just the last thing I
need
to
deal with.

But I still have to pack to fly out tomorrow night. We are off to
Knoxville
to see the sights and my Sis and BIL and I have to pull something

together
to have to sew on the plane and in the airport and in the timeshare in

the
evening. I can't go a week without something to sew. I'd be in major
withdrawal. Bert would roll his eyes at that one.

Anyways, beware and thanks for letting me whine.
