Default Another Quilted Silk Jacket

Hi Guys,
Well, I need to get myself geared up so I can start the prep work
for the kimono silks to be used in the quilted jacket I will make DD for
Christmas. I am going to be at my cabin for about 6 weeks starting the
end of July and want to work on it then. I have to baste the ends of
all the different fabrics (that's about 2 dozen!) before I can launder
them. Then pressing and deciding which fabric will go where on the jacket.
Most of the fabrics have some sort of butterfly design on them as DD
loves b'flies (HMMMM -- guess where any leftover butterflies will
go?!?!?). I will get all the pieces (18 or 20) cut out and then ship
them to myself at DD's. I'll do the quilting once I am at the cabin and
then hopefully have time to get the basic jacket put together. Not sure
if I will get it finished. Working on silk is tedious and very time
consuming so I take a lot of breaks. It would be nice not to have to
send the jacket back and forth across the country! If I get it
finished, I can carefully pack it in a box and leave it at DD's.
Anyway, posting about it means I have to get started -- LOLOL! Once
I tell everyone I am starting, I can't back out :-). I'm also going to
work on the winter cat quilt for myself! I've been collecting fabrics
for it for about 8 years so it's time to get started!! CiaoMeow ^;;^

Have you made one of these before? I'd love to see a photo. I tried on a
quilted silk jacket at Chico's that I'd have loved if the color hadn't made
me look dead. I've thought about it ever since and contemplated making one.

I made one for myself last summer -- photos are in my Webshots album.
There's no batting in the jacket so it's hard to see the quilting. I
backed each piece with dupioni silk and then quilted that. Then once
the pieces were assembled, I lined the whole thing with silk. Three
layers of silk are enough for me -- no batting required ;-). CiaoMeow

Chico's is the fashion designer of vampires

why did you expect anything else

LOL ... I had friends recommending Chico's all the time, so I finally
stopped in there one day. You are so right! Black or BDU (battle dress
uniform) colors. : P All of those make me look dead. I like bright jewel
colors and except for red (AHA! blood!), they just didn't have it ... I
haven't been back since.

I fancy bright colors in everything also.

I really learned to hate Chico's when I had this supervisor who insisted on
dressing a lunatic. One day she came into work wearing bumblebee barettes,
and yellow honeycomb knitted vest over a black top, a black and yellow
skirt, and wedge sandals with bumblebees on them. I don't know whether she
bought the outfit or any part of it at Chico's. That's not color. That's
something else: she was an executive and somehow she reminded more of a
second grader than a boss on that day. Maybe she was just trying to
prentend she was a busy bee.

Thus I worked hard to avoid anything she endorsed.

In the meantime, neat find: Although it is not on display, the American
Museum of Art in DC has a 48 state quilt in archive at the Smithsonian.
Maybe one day they will lay it out for folks to see.

I have been visiting the Jean Chin exhibit at the American Museum of Art
this month, because it is so neat. It's called Common Threads

She has some neat photos on Flickr of it
Check the last 3 on the right called Unravelled
http://www.flickr.com/groups/jeanshincommonthreads/

The description of the process is on the flickr site.
I'd say it's the exact opposite of the projects everyone does here.
The finished product was really neat btw

Oh my gosh - I have to respectfully disagree with some of your conclusions
about Chico's - my most favorite clothing store on the planet! I love
bright colors & Chico's has plenty of bright colors. I doubt that you would
ever see any "bumble-bee" themed items at Chico's. I think their clothes
are stylish, without being over the top. They are current, without being
trendy. I suppose their selection could be different in California than it
is in the rest of the country. Sometimes their tops are a little too
Miami-ish (too colorful & too much gold) for my tastes, but I try to
remember that they don't just design their clothes for my taste They also
carry tall length in pants (on-line only), & that is a great thing for me at
almost 6' tall. I have to tell you that I get more compliments on my
Chico's clothes than anything else I wear. Give them another try - it's
worth it. And they have awesome sales! There is one going on right now.
And if you live anywhere near a Chico's outlet - you practically feel like
you are stealing the clothes.

I think the largest size they carry might be a 3.5, which I think is a size
18. I can't remember if they carry petites or not. I know that Coldwater
Creek carries plus sizes (& petites). I usually manage to find things at
Coldwater Creek as well.
