Going crazy(er) Need Help!!!!
I have a problem that is driving me crazy. I have an agate slab abt
2.5 in. long and close to 2 in. wide and about an 11/0 on it's side thick. It's a cross between a ruby red mixed with a dark amber in color and I want to put it in a beaded bezeland hang it off a russian spiral necklace. I've tried modifying instructions for beaded cabs but they aren't working. Does anyone know where I can get instructions for beading a stone slab? What's actually going wrong with the bezel? I've beaded a bezel around a
large piece of paua shell that was slightly twisted. It was difficult, but not impossible. It should be possible to bead a stone slab. If you could describe the nature of the problem someone might be able to better answer your question. I don't want any backing on it because the light shining thru it is gorgeous so I'm trying to do it in peyote with japanese 11's. It's not a perfect oval, it has a slight kidney shape to it and the side are not like this | | but like this / /. My general plan was to make a circle of beads that goes around the outside and then do 4 rows of peyote around the ring then start a 1 bead decrease every other row to bring it towards the center for about 5 to 6 rows or 1/4 in. which ever comes first. Then drop the slab in and repeat the process on the other side. Sounds pretty straight forward. The problem is that by the time I start on the third row it looks like a ruffled cuff. I've never had this particular problem with peyote before and trying to keep the work from ruffling is makeing me crazy. John |

John, start the ring with larger size beads then reduce the bead size as
you progress the rounds. Work The back same as the front. Ok, I think I may be able to help. Instead of decreasing the number of beads
try this. Make your circle to fit the slab, then weave your 4 rows of peyote. Continue in peyote using beads a size down. I went from 8's to 11's and if necessary you can do one more row in the next size down. Weave the thread through the last row and pull it up firmly to secure. On close inspection, some thread will show so choose a colour that is as inconspicuous as possible. Fit your slab, face up into the resulting seat. Weave to the other side of the bezel and continue to peyote in the smaller bead size/s. The bezel securing the slab in place with begin to form. Weave as many rows as you need to secure the slab. This creates a 'backless' bezel. It's a little tricky to get the piece to stay put and may take some coaxing. The paua I used took coaxing and swearing, but I got it there in the end. If the circle is starting to ruffle before you weave in the smaller beads, check the uniformity of the beads you are using. For a bezel you need quite uniform beads or it goes rather wonky. I recommend Japanese seed beads for bezels. Hope that helps. Marisa AU/NZ "John Batt" wrote in message news:1123312352.aaeaf2fc777b648d4be5806363f1f7d3@t eranews... What about a netted bezel? I just tried this, recently, and it seems like
it would work well with a slab. -- Jerri www.beadbimbo.com To subscribe to my mailing list, send an e-mail to: with "Subscribe" in the subject line. Try containing it with netting instead.

First let me recommend that the Japanese beads you use are seed beads and
not delicas. Delicas are like tiles that lock in, whereas seed beads are more rounded will squirm into a better fit, especially on a curved or irregular shaped stone. Basically you'll be doing free-form peyote in as regular a pattern as you can manage. Or else regular peyote with a lot of adjustment for curves. Sorry to be tardy replying to everyone who tried to assist me. I picked
up the latest copy of BEADWORK and there was an article by Dustin Wedekind on making a bezel with RAW and it worked like a charm. # rows of 11/0 right angle cinched down with a couple of rows of delica peyote. As soon as the necklace is finished I'll post it on my website for all to see. John John Batt wrote: I have a problem that is driving me crazy. Hi all, I got the necklace done and it is at http://www.thebattcave.net/crafts/eyeofra.html I submitted it to Beadwork for their W.O.R.D. column and they said it will be in an upcoming issue. I'm getting ready to start a new one with a different colored agate slab.
