Default Need help with Tension.....

Hi gals... (and guys)..

I'm having trouble with my Brother 8250. I am trying to quilt together 2
cotton fabrics with warm and natural in between. and no matter what i do i
can't get my tension right. on the bottom of the fabric, the bobbin thread
is just straight.. i can pull it right out... and the top thread is looping
at the bottom so i can see the little loop bumps when i turn the fabric
over..

I have the tension set all the way to 9.. the dial doesn't go any further..
but no matter what i do the tension isn't right. Is there something i can do
with different thread or something?

right now i have bobbin is cotton 40 and top is polyester 100. those
numbers don't mean anything to be i just got them for the colors... i try to
use all cotton all the time but this one color didn't come in cotton

please help any advice is welcome...

Try a glass of wine. That always helps my tension.

I hate to tell you but I think that type of looping calls for a run to a
repairman. At least that's the only way I ever solved it on my Singer.

Giselle (I'm trying to remember: is that a timing problem? Can't remember,
darn it.)

I know almost nothing about it, but as I understand it, you should be using
the same thread in your bobbin as you are on top. I don't know if the
combination of poly & cotton is causing your problem, but try sewing with
cotton on top & in the bobbin & see if it makes a difference.

Have you tried sewing on a single piece of fabric? Will it work then?

Definitely sounds like upper thread issues....so try changing to a new
needle, try using a different bobbin, and even try different thread
(don't use your project for this, do this on a scrap quilt sandwich).

Basically try to rule out what it isn't....

Also check the tension discs & bobbin area for any debris stuck inside.

You hit it on the head..

As soon as i switched to cotton in both it worked fine... but this stinks
because they don't have the color i want at the LQS for the top.. but maybe
i can do poly for both the top and the bottom.. hmmmmmm

Thanks for the help!!!

Not that I would encourage anyone to quilt with poly thread ;-) but are you
absolutely sure it's threaded correctly? Sounds like there is hardly any
tension on it. Maybe some fuzz in between your tension disks?

Don't have a Brother, mine's a Pfaff, but I use different threads top and
bottom all the time with no trouble.

I've never heard of the Brother 8250, but the 8200 has has a different
type of tension than most machines. The thread is fed through the
tension discs differently. I remember that it was recommended that it
is essential that the stitch length be set to the longest stitch
length in order for the thread to feed properly. For most machines the
stitch length doesn't matter.
