Off and On Topic-Friend and storage and sewing

Off Topic part 1

Moving forward has been good the last two weeks. My friend has counseling
two days a week and feels it is good and he is comfortable with it. Has
covered many things already and has a better sense of calm. A few moments,
but okay he says. I noticed his mood is so much lighter and talkative
today. He has a new friend but only in seeing each other, maybe holding
hands. A bit too fast for my liking in some ways, but my friend and his new
friend have talked a lot and are going very slow.

Off Topic part 2

Bert had a revelation this week in his housework and has decided that after
washing/drying the sheets that he will put in the closet, he will fold them
all up and put all into one of the pillow cases. This way he will have all
parts together and they will not fall all over in the closet. He might be
onto something.

On Topic

I buy fabric for specific projects, often with the pattern in hand, and get
home and try to store them all together and am only partly successful.
Until I had my own revelation of sorts. I'm sure you're all familiar with
those zippered clear plastic pouches that curtains and sheets and other
things like that come in from the store. Well, I have kept them all and
when needed I paw through them for the appropriate size and put
fabric/pattern, and anything else I need into the pouch and zip it up and
stack it on the shelf. Contained, stackable to an extent, and see through
when I'm reaching for my next project. Maybe you've already discovered
this, but it's new to me.

Would you just go sit 'over there' and let me talk to Bert? The fastest way
to do bedding is to wash, dry and put back on whatever you took off. No
folding, no storage.
If that's not the plan, here's how I 'do' bedding. I fold the fitted
sheet as well as I can without making it a really big deal. I fold the flat
sheet pretty much neatly so that I can wrap it around the fitted sheet. I
fold the pillow cases length-wise and slip them into the process of wrapping
around with the flat sheet. Each bundle is complete.
When we first lived here (since we'd never had a real linen closet) I
even went so far as to label the shelves as to double, single, etc.
My favorite trick for the linen closet is to save soap wrappers and
boxes and put them here and there in the closet. Keeps the closet smelling
just 'good'. Not Gag a Goat perfumey or nose-burning freebreeze, simply
nice. Steven is very blessed to have you. He knows that. Polly

Well Polly, that sounds like a really good way to fold things up too. But,
he used to wash and put right back on but that has changed and here's why.
We have regular cotten sheets for in the summer and warmer weather and
flannel sheets for in the winter. On top of that, he's decided that we need
a dark maroon plaid and a plain lighter leaf green for in the summer and a
dark maroon plaid and cream with various color sprigly twigs for the winter
sheets. Yes, four set of sheets for our bed and he does like to rotate so a
folding method/combining method is needed.

We do have our little habits don't we. I do like the idea of the wrappers
and boxes though. I'll have to start doing that.

I have masses of spare bedding for an almost infinite combination of
bed/sleeping arrangements. If I had room, I'd go for the pillowcase
option. But I don't. I go fopr the greatest packing density. Sheets
and pillowcases cause no problem, but it's all those duvets and
pillowcases that I have trouble with... I need to keep them dry, and
dust and moth free, and at the moment I have no cupboard for them so
they live in the loft. I use these lovely vacuum bags I found. One
under blanket, one duvet, two pillows (or four for the double bed sets)
gets squished into the bags and TAMED!

OT part 1 - yeah for small steps forward. That is a good thing!
OT part 2 - that's how I have folded sheet sets for years, it is
really convenient to grab a pillowwcase with the matching/sized
components
OnT - sometimes as I rootle through I put fabrics together for a
project. Except it may be a while, and I decide to use a choice in
something else. Then I may have to pull something else to replace it,
or remember to put a note in there that packet is not really ready. I
am happy enough to have my fabrics sorted by color families/novelties/
southwest/batiks.

I cannot bring myself to throw away those wonderful clear plastic,
zippered pouches that sheets, blankets, curtains, and other goodies
are sold in, and have all of mine zipped up in a HUGE one that a king-
sized feather bed came in! I keep them all, no matter what size, and
keep using them until the zipper breaks or the seams give way or the
plastic gets so brittle it splits. I use them for yarns in storage,
for yarns being used in a current project, for fabrics, for quilt
blocks for quilts-in-progress, for small embroidery projects, and even
for tatting. I hope that whoever invented them became a millionaire,
because she -- I presume it was a woman! -- has saved masses of
fabrics, yarns, floss, and threads and has kept so many of us from
losing our minds.

Zip loc brand has large bags now too. These are great for the storage of
soft squishy stuff!
