Thanks for your message but I do not know if that type is available in
UK.

I'd suggest getting in touch with diabetes charities, they should know about
different types available in the UK.

That's the website for the forearm test monitor, and I've seen it mentioned in
research actually performed in the UK. Perhaps your doc or the nurse in the
office could track one down for you! Best of luck!

Shirley,

DH said that his most successful sugar-free attempts have been with
Splenda. Do you have that there? It is relatively new so you might
have to look. It is a sugar substitute that can be used more or less
cup-for-cup in place of sugar. Stevia, a herbal sugar replacement, is a
liquid; you only need a drop or two to replace a lot of sugar, which is
unfortunate for baking (have to substitute for the bulk of the sugar).
We won't use nutra-sweet or the other older sugar substitutes because
they may cause cancer in the long run (and don't taste like sugar anyhow).

I will get him to write up whatever else he has.

Most of his baking modifications have been for me, diary-free and
egg-free. Would be happy to share those too if anyone needs them

I just realized that was kind of a dumb remark... I'm sorry.

Actually my mother (who can't eat sugar and a whole bunch of other
things because of her alergies and other problems ) has pretty much
changed the way she eats altogether and now really likes eating other
types of foods.
Of course baked goods are the ones that she sometimes craves. Since
she can't eat wheat or dairy either it is a challenge. DH has been
inventing recipees that she can eat... if you're interested I can send
you a few.

Shirley,
So sorry to hear that.
There are some better sugar-substitutes out now...

That's the only non-sugar, or artificial sweetener that leaves me with a nasty
after taste! I like Splenda, tho.

One off the wall thing, though. Keep an eye on your feet. The first
sign I was having blood sugar problems was that I had a terrible case
of athlete's foot that wouldn't go away. Heaven only knows why, but
that's what triggered my doctor's curiousity.

Diabetes can exacerbate or trigger circulation problems. If your blood
doesn't circulate properly, you'll have a hard time healing injuries to
your extremeties. Fungi are opportunists, and will take over if you
can't get the blood to your feet to fight them off. Feeding them
sugar-laden blood just makes them even more happy and vigorous.

Another thing you have to watch out for (or, be aware of) is neuropathy
-- where the nerve endings in the skin of your feet die off. If it gets
bad enough, you might, say, step on something sharp and not even feel
it. Then, you will have the Devil's own time getting it to heal.
Gangrene and amputation are possiblities.

I can usually tell when I've been bad (eating too much of things I
should avoid) when my feet become numb or ultra-sensitive. It requires
days of massaging and quarts of body lotion to get them back to normal.

Yeah, we think it has a wierd after-taste too.

I think most of them do.

Personally if I were diabetic I think I'd try to avoid all of them and
just learn to eat differently... at least, for the most part.
Having been vegetarian all this time, I think my tastes have really
changed. I don't like very rich foods. If I don't eat sugar for a
while I find I don't like really sweat foods either.

One thing I don't think I could ever give up are carbs, though!

Which is why I originally said "non-sugar" sweetener too...

it's not an artificial sweetener.

A note on diabetics and sugar.

It's not that diabetics are forbidden to eat sugar, its that
carbohydrates, of which sugar is just one, are not metabolized properly.
A spoonful of sugar in your tea in nowhere near as bad for you as
nice, hot, baked potato.

And, you'd be appalled to discover how many things that you wouldn't
regard as sugary are loaded with the stuff. Pasta sauce springs to mind.

Watch your carbs. All things in moderation.

Shirley,

It takes time to get yourself back in control but it can be done. Six
months after I was diagnosed, my husband and my son were diagnosed too. Not
fun but we have to live with it and if we can, anybody can.
