How to check real Silver?

At the moment I am travelling in the northern part of Thailand and found
great necklaces and other silver?craft, handmade by some villagers near the
border to Myamar.
They told me, it is 800 Silver.
I would like to buy some but don`t have real Experience. How can I find out
if this jewelry is real Silver?
Is there any Possibility to check it, by some chemicals for example, as one
friend told me, or another method to be sure of there quality?

Why worry about it? Silver costs a few dollars an ounce; if the work is
authentic its value exceeds that of the metal many, many times over.
