Popularity shouldn't have mattered, quite frankly, and the fact that
popularity DOES make a huge difference is the main reason I left the hug
list. I know I'm not precisely liked around here.

I'd like to respond as a new-ish, Hug contributor. I just counted up and I've
sent blocks for at least 7 Hugs (if you count Frood's Friend's Fire as three
separate ones) and each one made me feel good at least three times: once while
making the block, once when standing on line at the P.O. to mail it, and once
when looking at the posted picture when it is done. That's a lot of return for
some bits of fabric and spare time. My advice to all: drop Karen a line and ask
to be put on the Hug list if you aren't' already.

To adress the "worthiness" of particular causes -- Most mother's know that tiny
voice that says, "Maybe this isn't a regular cold/flu/ear ache. Maybe I should
call the doctor." Most times you are right to call the doctor. Sometimes one of
us will get the tiny voice that says, "Jane/John Doe has been through a lot
lately. Maybe she/he needs a Hug." Just like I trust the instincts of other
Moms, I trust the instinct of other quilters. I may not know the whole story or
may not know what else Jane or John may have going on. But if someone thinks she
or he needs a Hug, then a Hug is probably needed.

I can't address this as a Hug Hostess. Yet ;-)

Id like to open a discussion about making Hugs or group quilt projects.
There is nothing more emotional than making a Hug, it has to be one of the
most joyful things we can do with our art. Having participated in a few now,
two as hostess and a few as the quilter, I would like to hear from others
what you found to be the most frustrating parts of the project, what was
most fun, and what would you do differently next time you were called to
host one.
My goal is to help those who might wish to host one avoid or anticipate the
most common problems, and encourage those people who would like to donate
blocks or time to a Hug to feel less shy about doing so.

I've received (most gratefully!) a HUG myself, but this past year or so my
family life and DH's illness have left little time for any quilting. That
said, a few times I have sent along backing fabric for a HUG, or a block that
was simply a pretty piece of fabric cut to the block size, or a few $$s towards
the cost of making a HUG. That way I have felt that I have contributed
something, even if it wasn't an actual block. As others have mentioned, HUGS
are an individual thing - you need to do what works for you.

And sometimes it does just boil down to bad timing.
I've had to not participate in several hugs over the last year due to
handling my own families needs. That does not mean I didn't think someone
wasn't deserving, it just simply meant I had to put my priorities in place.

As keeper of the list I can tell you that just about every other Hug is
questioned by somebody or other. .....

I'd be willing to bet that Janet's Fire {{Quilt}} didn't get questioned by
anyone :-). When a person loses absolutely *everything* in a fire -- even
their cat babies -- I don't think there would be one person who would question
the need for a {{{HUG}}} :-)). CiaoMeow ^;;^

I'd say it was more a matter of familiarity. I wasn't implying popularity.
Sorry if I made that impression. You are liked around here!

Just email me privately with your email address, and I can add you to the
list of those who want to be notified when a Hug is being requested.

I can hardly credit that someone would actually go to the lengths of
'registering' doubt as to the worthiness or otherwise of a hug. If
someone questions and doesn't want to participate, all they have to do
is *not* take part. Surely?

Howdy!
And this is where the entire idea, purpose, intent of a HUG quilt
falls apart in this group today. Not EVERYONE wants to participate in
EVERY quilt. If we do, fine. If we don't, then someone is willing to
have her feelings hurt and call it a "popularity contest." Bullsqwatchy!
My time is worth at least the time of anyone else, and I treasure my time
and my quilting. If I don't feel *called* to make a Hug block, I won't.
And when we first started this Hug quilt business, that was fine:
if you want to participate, we appreciate it; if you don't want to/can't
participate,
we don't hold it against you. With loving understanding going both ways.
Of course I question the validity of the individual Hug quilt requests
passed
on to me. Do I have the time for this project? Is it someone I feel
compelled to help out at this time? Is it a need that "speaks" to me? Is
it someone involved
directly w/ RCTQ or is it a friend of an RCTQ quilter, a family member, a
friend of a friend, a mother-in-law's 2nd cousin's first husband's new
grandchild?
Distance doesn't always make the heart fond. I just don't go to the Hug
List Holder to posit these questions; I can usually figure it out for
myself.
If you DO NOT want to make a Hug Quilt Block, that's okay; you're still
welcome here.

On Subject topic: Give your best, do your best, whether it's making a
block, quilting the quilt, adding the binding, whatever part of the Hug
you're involved in,
do your best, not your quickest or your least. What kind of message does
that send to the receiver? Yes, I've seen some shabby results and on 2
occasions cleaned it up, because I could and it was important to me.
Because as one of the Hostesses in those projects, it was my decision. If
there were hard feelings, I apologized to the person who felt hurt, but I
did not change my decision to
Give of Your Best on behalf of RCTQ.

One other thought, discussed more than once privately among some of those
who've been around here for longer: maybe the Hug Quilt idea gets watered
down. Some of us like to have a really serious, personal project to
surround w/ a Hug Quilt. The more Hug quilts proposed, the more common the
idea becomes, the less participation there might be.
It's an individual decision, to pass or play. I respect that and expect
others to do the same without whining and moaning. Or not.
Sometimes I expect nothing. ;-D

Btw: Anytime someone says "Nobody likes me" on this group, she or he can
go dig her/his own plate of worms and sit down in the midst of her/his stash
and eat 'em all by her/his own self. I'm not a jr.high kid playing
"Popularity Contest" and I won't beg ANYone to stick around. Expecting
everyone to participate in every quest isn't realistic or sensible. And
that's my opinion. VBG

There is a list, a bit out of date, of who received Hug Quilts, blocks (I
did),
fabric, or other expressions of caring from RCTQ.
You can Google RCTQ:
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=e...rafts.textiles
..quilting
and search for "History of Hugs and List"; it's still there.
If someone wants to update it, please do. ;-)

With hugs and thanks to everyone here,

Yeah, that was a bummer. Not many people knew you guys yet, for one

thing.
But every Hug takes on a life of it's own, it seems. And I've never seen

an
ugly Hug, a too small Hug, or a disappointing Hug. Somehow, it just

always
works out.

when all the other hostesses rave about getting dozens and making twin
size or queen size quilts out of them
