I'm the opposite, practicing alkie who couldnt get it right so I gave it up
as a bad job. That was some years ago.. let me think... 24?
Im sober today. Thats the important number for me. Its more fun being nutso
when sober. I wasnt nuts when drunk, just stupid.
There are so many things in my life that I cannot imagine having now if I
had chosen to keep drinking. DH, DD, DGS,... et al. Beads, quilting...Ok..
lets sum it up as "a Life"...
Congrats to you on your 14 years!

Yeah, I used to be a practicing alcoholic. But I got it perfect and don't
have to practice any more. I can be just as crazy stone cold sober. (14

My inventor friend, Walter is like that with gas, especially diesel

Driving behind a truck for an hour would make him very ill for a

couple
days. Needless to say, he can't live in any city.

I think alcohol is like that too. One reason I think that, is that if

an
alcoholic stops drinking, even for a couple decades, and then begins

to
drink a little again, the addiction returns almost immediately.

But with age our bodies handle toxins (and other damage) less readily.

And
also with age, I think we are less willing to put up with the side

effects
of intoxication -- you know, like stupidity (sometimes).

Same here, hon. If, once you are addicted, you remain an alcoholic, then I
am still an alcoholic (as I claim if I go to an AA meeting). But not a
practicing one. When I was drinking, what I got perfect was to be perfectly
awful, especially to myself.

Thanks, Kathy. I have to say, though, that the hard part was working on the
co-dependence that was behind the behaviour, and the continuing work on
Depression which made the use of the depressant alcohol so natural.

(((((Tina and Diana)))) I was a mean drunk...and a young one. Would sneak out at
age 12 and get smashed. When drunk, I would smash things, even. I don't remember a
lot of what went on for the 3 years I drank, but I do remember quitting. For some
reason, I can still drink on occasion, but there are very very strict rules about it
now, since DH's father and grandfather were both alcoholics. 1. I have to eat first,
2. never drink alone, always with someone who knows my rules and will help me enforce
them, 3. only one drink in a 24 hour period, and 4. never ever drink when
sad/depressed/angry. Even following the rules, it's a little bit scary for me, but
so far, so good. It's been 18.5 years since the last time I got drunk, and I was 14
years old.

Wow. That is quite some escape you had! There must be quite a story behind
it. And quite a story of recovery too (from what was behind the drinking).

You are more ambitious than I am. I'm too lazy to follow rules. It's
easier to not drink.

Basically, I was self medicating. I had been sexually abused when i was 8 by my
brother, and in middle school, i fell in with the wrong kids, and they had parties
all the time. I was really lucky I didn't try drugs. The drinking stopped when a
friend foiled a suicide attempt when i was 14. I don't know where he is now, but I
still think of him often. He saved my life. I spent all the time i used to spend
partying at his house, and when i got out on my own, I got therapy (because i didn't
want my parents knowing before). I'm a lot healthier now, but I never forget. If I
forget, I'll slip back into that dark place.
