thinks they exist. I've been soldering with 100 watts for almost 30

years.

Yup....but, iffe'n you'd been a-sodderin' with one of dem 175W 1100*F
irons, you'd have a whole passel of youngun's, a giant international
distribution warehouse, a whole fleet of cars and trucks, and been a
world-famous author and lecturer. Not to mention being the most respected
and admired poster to all of usenet.

Why people woulda been just clamoring to sit at yer feet and maybe even
touch the hem of yer robe. See what you've missed? All for the want of

75
measly watts and 400*F. You've just squandered yer life, bubba.

Sniff.

OH you guys are priceless!
Kill filed the dip**** after his last profound uttering, but nice to see he
isn't just posting with free rein, I should hope to hell the "students" he
is "teaching" don't catch him in the parking lot some dark night and lynch
his ass for taking advantage of them....Can't wait for another Glass Expo,
so I can sign up for one of his classes and have it cancelled, again. Maybe
they wouldn't let him in the country because he knows so much. If all that
knowledge got out to the general public it would lead to the collapse of
glass technique as we know it. Better off keeping such information in
Canada, where it's safe.

And...if you'd been using yer wet belt sander religiously, why....they'd
probably be naming streets after you. Like, "Dead End".

We sent a package to Germany last year. Less than 10 lbs. UPS wanted $120.00
US post office $25.00. It took longer but it was worth the wait if you have
the time.

I found the DHL handling charge quite small and thought it reasonable, I
have heard UPS is quite expensive in this regard and would agree from my
experience.

I would try and get an indication of the VAT and import duty you may have

customs duty and VAT is variable as to whether you get charged, some have

from the US only to be hit by the duties 3 month later. Nice DHL quick

delivery so you get your items but deferred charging for the taxes,
didn't know about that. Also got a product from the US as I couldn't get
the quality I required in the UK, the postage from the US cost more than
the product and the product wasn't cheap and the product wasn't heavy
either.

Thanks for the warning g
The oncosts vary from zero (if the package doesn't get stopped) up to
15 uk pounds on 86 uk pounds-worth of dichro that I had shipped over.
Still worked out about 1/4 of the price I'd pay over here for the same
item.....

This was delivered via Royal Mail - ISTR that 'proper' couriers (like
DHL) charge a punitive 'handling' cost on top of the Import Duty / Vat
- happened to me with some 2nd hand lapidary gear that came from the
USA.

Annoying - but that's how it works g

'Ere - I said that - days ago - but nobody listened......! - (way
before all the name-calling started.....)

Was I ignored because I only have a 75watt soldering iron ?? grin -
feeling like a 2nd-class citizen here.

Wish I'd hung onto the 1950's iron I found in a house move - it
weighed about 4 pounds, had a long beechwood handle, and a gigantic
copper bit (about 1" wide and 3" long) - and claimed to be rated at
about 300W / 220v.
That'd give me real street cred !

I ended up presenting it to somebody at the company I worked for who
had done a spectacularly awful job of reworking some electronics
circuit boards - it's probably worth a fortune now g

Looks like we have a winner in this debate.

Sorry to answer my own post (sad, isn't it ??) - but I emailed
coopertools.com (who manufacture / distribute Weller) - and just got
this reply....

===================quote========================== ======

Further to your recent email enquiry we supply in the UK the W101 100W
temperature controlled iron. This iron used the CT6 range of tips.
They are available in 700F and 800F. the 900F tips were discontinued.
Apologies but the rumour is no longer true.

===================unquote======================== =========

So - there you go.....

Dennis had better hang on to those 900F tips - as their value is bound
to appreciate in years to come due to their rarity.........

So everybody was right g

Regards
Adrian

Thanks for that info, I do have the time but at the time the US supplier
said they dealt with UPS and that was it. They also said that DHL
charged them a $20 callout charge for collection. From the postage on
the invoice they sent from the US to the UK it might have been cheaper
to send each of the 100 items in a separate envelope via USPS than send
one box of 100 UPS. I will investigate further in future, fortunately
these are not items I need often and 100 should last awhile and the on
cost to the final product overall is small. The main issue I had with
the UK supply I found was that the current maker, probably in the far
east was making sub standard parts and that was the only option. Useless
to me so I sourced them from a US supplier. I had actually got a sample
from the supplier in the UK and that was fine so I ordered some, those
supplied were useless and returned.
