Default VERY OT- Any Belly Dancing quilters out there?

I have become fascinated by a program on DirecTV called "Shimmy" which is
supposed to teach some basics of belly dancing. Do any of the quilters here
do any belly dancing? Is there a good teaching/learning *easy* beginner's
video that I can buy? (I'm NOT young and I have severe arthritis, so gentle
and easy is a must!) It sure looks like a fun way to exercise and I like
the fact that the dancers aren't skinny but all seem to have nicely toned,
yet rounded 'womanly' figures- that's what I aspire to... not the skin and
bones or ripped/muscled look. (Like I could ever become skinny or well
muscled!!! LOL)

Any belly dancing tips out there in RCTQ Land?

I play the music for it.

Hilary Thacker in Edinburgh knows what she's doing:

http://www.hilarysbazaar.com (follow the "bazaar" link).

Her DVDs are pretty widely used in the UK. One thing she's careful
about is making sure her students don't do themselves an injury with
risky moves, which might be relevant to you.

Leslie, you are right. Belly dancing is great exercise. But I am not
sure about beginner tapes. Let me cogitate on that. (I know that one of
my teachers from long ago did make some instructional tapes..... name
is, if I am remembering correctly after all this time.... Kathryn/Kathy
Ferguson.)
As with any exercise one of the keys is to start with warm up stretches.
Much of the idea behind the dance is to isolate and control individual
muscles, slowly then in some cases, moving to a quick rhythm.

Good luck with it,
Pati, in Phx

Leslie, Melinda (in Oz) did do belly dancing. I don't know if she still does
it or not.
She only pops in occasionally but I think that she is in the directory if
you want to contact her privately ( I lost my copy in a crash and ahven't
got around to asking for another)

Leslie, I've started taping that show! I came across it while surfing
the listings for FIT TV. In my area there is a dance studio that
teaches belly dancing. You might want to get a listing from a rec
facility or adult education center near you. I just make take a class
this summer instead of quilting classes.
