Default ring repair

My husband has managed to mangle a silver ring I gave him. It saved his
hand but broke the stone. I hammered it back into shape on my ring mandrel
but the stone will have to be replaced. I'm wondering if bending back the
prongs will work or if new prongs need to be set.
Thanks,

If the prongs haven't cracked then there's a very good chance they are
still serviceable, especially if you anneal them first. Cracked prongs
will have to be repaired.

[Men's rings rarely use prong settings; now you know why. Maybe next time a
gypsy setting would be better.]

I should have said "saved his hand from being smashed under a desk". * =}
Thanks for the advice.
