I have an oddity here in that I have the reply without having the original
message, but ...
this kind of shell casting is very common in bronze metal casting and is
being used more and more in glass casting because it results in a strong
uniform thickness shell (as opposed to the weak plaster that usually varies
enormously in thickness because the shape of the container differs from the
object) Here is one description
