janome 419 s buttonhole?
I have lost the manual for my Janome 419S and need to make 12
buttonholes to complete a shower curtain. I have the slider foot for buttonholes but I don't know what settings to use for the one-step feature. THe most obvious is the symbol for buttonholes on the A-J wheel, but what about thread length and width? I also found the little arm near the needle that pulls down. But what am I missing? Thanks in advance. |

Your machine is supposed to do "one-step" button holes which means you don't have to make adjustments or switch anything once you start sewing the hole. Since your machine is a mechanical (?) and not an electronic, I don't know *exactly* how it will work, but here's how it works on my MC8000 which does one-step buttonholes, but is an electronic. The main thing that will be different, I think, is the 8000 stops automatically when it's done making a buttonhole. The lever that pulls down is the way the machine senses how long to make the button hole. Set the spacing on the button hole foot to match the hooks or buttons or whatever you're using. You're determining the length of the hole. Set stitch length to around 2.5. The smaller the number, the more tightly the edges of the hole will be bound, but if you go too far, the machine has trouble moving over the mass of thread generated. Stitch width works the same. I leave mine on the default which is maybe 2mm wide. If you get too wide, you will have trouble cutting the hole open and will need to sew very short stitches to make adequate binding. Set the machine to the button hole setting. Thread tension should be on automatic and foot pressure on 2 (out of 3 on my machine). Line up the starting needle positon with the left front corner of the button hole location and drop the foot. Be sure the lever you pulled down is in contact with the front "thingy" on the foot and start sewing. The machine should start end tacking, then shift to sewing the left side of the hole. When the lever hits the back "thingy" the machine will reverse and sew the other side of the button hole. You may have to watch so you can stop when you get to the end of the cycle, because I don't know if your machine stops automatically. It does on my 8000. Oh, be sure to try a test on scraps first.
