Choosing Lamp Bases for Stained Glass Lampshades
Hi folks!
I recently completed a nice 4 panel lampshade with a fish motif, and made (with a mold) a ceramic base for it. When I put them together, I found that the base just didn't look right with the shade. Both the size and the shape of the base didn't look right. Are there some guidelines for choosing the shape and size of a base to go with the shade? Cheers, Suzan |

IMHO (about 23 years of shade making) there are a few choices.
diameter of the shade and height of the shade is important to the base height. 12 to 13 inch diameter shades with about 8 inch high shades look ok with a base between 7.5 to about 9 inches in height. Some of my dome or cone tiffany style shades around 16 to 20 inches in diameter use a base about the height of the diameter of the shade. Shade heights can be adjusted by using shorter harps or risers as needed. what diameter shades do you have? Some of the original Tiffany's looked too squat with a short base under a wide shade, other looked too high with a tall base under a narrow (small diameter) shade. no set answer....... h -- In the words of the IMMORTAL USED CAR DEALER: THERE IS AN ASS FOR EVERY SEAT! |
