Am i now to blame for the Hebrew Meaning [which is Centuries older
than any Company in the Usa ? or for the mere fact that I told people
about it ?????
Your Example of Chevy is marvelous , Here we had years ago a company
selling Frigidairs to another country,that wouldn`t sell well,
as the Factory`s name was a scolding word , in the other language.
Making people aware that their terminology could be understood
differently in other cultures, is one of the most important aspects
of international Forums as this Ng , could help with.

Personally and in this particular instance? Because the way I read
your comments when you showed somebody's signature line (who is
stitching the Marbek Nativity) implied that Marbek was in some way

Well, if you read the same posts I did, you saw this from Mirjam:

the Plain Hebrew meaning is the place where animals are locked in to
be Fattened and stuffed with food to be slaughtered .
Tht is why we smile uneasily when we see all this posts about making
the marbek etc....obviously the maker took a term from the Tanach =
Bible without realizing it`s meaning .

To me, it certainly seemed that the term had negative connotations,
not that it had been misused or mistranslated, but maybe that's
just me. I certainly took it that the Hebrew term would be a bad thing,
but this whole thread has been about misinterpretations, knowing
that MarBek is just a company name. You know, years ago Chevy introduced
its Nova, which unfortunately means "doesn't go" in Spanish (and is
two words in Spanish anyway). If it doesn't make any sense
in another language, maybe it was never intended that way
in the first place. Heck, the English use the term "rubber" for
eraser, which makes Americans laugh. But we use the word "fanny"
to mean something different than they do. You may start a bit
mentally when you hear it, but then we all do a quick translation,
and have a little laugh.

been many a time silent and do not see the problem , sometimes i am

Of course not. Telling people that the word marbek has a meaning
in Hebrew is one thing, and is interesting to learn; insisting that
it must have been have taken from the Tanach without understanding
its meaning is another. You may be correct, but I happen to think
the alternate explanation may be more likely, namely that the
owners decided to combine their names and MarBek probably sounded
better than BekMar. I should tell you that this practice --
combining names -- is fairly common here in the US when several
people form a company. Perhaps it is not common in your part
of the world.

Ah, Israel's Nova, very funny! Thanks for sharing. You know,
certain hand signals that very innocent in one part of the world
are obscene in other places. Maybe someday we will have an
international committee, or at least a word and hand gesture
dictionary....Actually, they probably already exist.

Of course no one wants to say something offensive. Well, that's not
true. Some of my neighbors say so many offensive words during arguments
that I don't know how they even know what they're arguing about.

But there comes a time when everyone has to learn not to be offended
with innocent, naive uses of words, phrases and gestures.

Perhaps THAT is where we need to rethink our premises. Just assume the
other person did it innocently without knee jerking emotionally in
response. Now THAT'S tough to do, but boy what a lesson in
self-discipline. And what a way to love thy neighbor.
