Fleece quilt - what thread to use?
I am making a two sided fleece quilt for my DH's 5 year old nephew as a
quickie Christmas gift. On one of my business jaunts, I found wonderful Yankee baseball fleece and he is absolutely ga-ga over them. I bought that for the front and navy fleece for the back. I was going to do a white buttonhole stitch around the edges but am not quite sure what kind of thread to use. Help, please! -- Alice in NJ, Royal Cybrarian http://www.ourcyberfamily.us/ "Just about the time a woman thinks her work is done, she becomes a grandmother." Edward H. Dreschnack |

Fleece quilt - what thread to use?
Alice, just about any old ordinary thread will work. I'm 'assuming" you
mean you're going to stitch on the SM. For the stitching to really show, you might try a two-thread on top load. If your SM doesn't have a way to do 2 threads, you can put a drinking straw on the spindle and simple stack them. Do have the threads both coming off the same way. The color choices here are very limited but I have lots of Coats and Clark poly/cotton from my dressmaking days and they do fine. As always - do a trial run with a double layer of fleece. You may need to adjust something and you'll want to make the stitch as wide and long as you can get away with. While you're practicing, do at least one corner. You might want to cut them just barely curved. So much easier than a sharp corner pivot. Let us know about your success. I'd think twice about using white, though. A 5 year-old is sure to be dragging it around and the white could get grubby looking pretty quickly. How about using red instead? Fleece quilt - what thread to use?
I have seen fleece blankets/quilts like this done by slitting the edges
(like making a fringe)of both pieces and then tieing thefringes together in an overhand knot. The slit was about 3 inches long I think. It keeps the two layers together and makes a nice finish on the edge. Betty "AliceW" wrote in message . .. I've seen that finishing edge as well and am not too keen on it. Never was
much of a fringe kinda gal, even with knit or crochet items. But it does look cute on smaller fleece items. This will be large enough to cover the top of his bed. But thanks for the suggestion. -- Alice in NJ, Royal Cybrarian http://www.ourcyberfamily.us/ "Just about the time a woman thinks her work is done, she becomes a grandmother." Edward H. Thanks, Polly. I guess I should have indicated that I was going to do the
stitching by hand rather than machine. I don't think I will get the "finishing" effect I'm looking for with the machine. But it was a great idea! -- Alice in NJ, Royal Cybrarian http://www.ourcyberfamily.us/ "Just about the time a woman thinks her work is done, she becomes a grandmother." Edward H. Thanks, Julia. I think the pearl cotton is what I will choose. I may
rethink the color as well. I was trying to stick to the Yankee colors of blue and white. Fold over a 4 inch hem and sew around all sides. Slice thru both
thicknesses every 1 inch or so. Take the resulting loops and do a slip stitch (loop one loop over the next) all around the edge. Hank sew the last loop into place. Makes a very sturdy braid around the edges. -- http://community.webshots.com/user/snigdibbly SNIGDIBBLY ~e~ " / \ http://members.ebay.com/aboutme/snigdibbly. http://www.ebaystores.com/snigdibbly...ox&refid=store "woodys girl" wrote in message news:0MPlf.138641$y_1.29336@edtnps89... Hi Sniggs, I would love to make myself a poncho and I was wondering what
pattern you are using. I love the braided edge idea for the blankie. Linda in Tx |
